A weekend call-out for an RCD that had been intermittently tripping—sometimes constantly, while at other times it would hold for hours. Even wet weather didn’t seem to follow any obvious pattern. ⚡️

After investigating the downstairs lighting circuit, the cause soon became clearer. We found a mixture of 1.5mm² and 2.5mm² conductors, poorly secured cables that fell out as soon as the downlights were removed, and—best of all—the circuit protective conductor being used as a neutral, identified only with black tape! 🤷🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

I ended up working through almost the entire lighting circuit, correcting the faults and making the connections safe. It took some careful fault-finding, but we got there in the end and left the customer with a safe, reliable circuit. 👍🏻

Another reminder that intermittent electrical faults rarely fix themselves—and sometimes what’s hidden above the ceiling is quite an eye-opener!

⚡ An intermittent RCD fault with no obvious pattern…

We were called out after a customer’s RCD began tripping unexpectedly, often during the evening while they were in bed. With no clear pattern, the boiler was initially suspected, as its demand can change throughout the evening.

Further investigation revealed an older installation containing aluminium conductors. Although the wiring showed its age, testing confirmed that it was suitable to remain in service for the time being, allowing us to work within the customer’s budget and make the installation considerably safer.

The consumer units were upgraded to provide improved protection, and the gas bonding within the garage was also brought up to a better standard.

As the property is currently occupied by one person and may soon be sold, the customer chose this measured improvement rather than a full upgrade. We did, however, advise that further modernisation of the installation should be considered—particularly if the property’s occupancy and electrical demand increase in the future.

Not every older installation requires everything replacing immediately. Good electrical work is about testing properly, understanding the risks and finding the safest practical solution for the customer. 👍🏻

⚡ ONE STRAND WAS ALL THAT REMAINED! ❄️

We attended this air-conditioning system to investigate a loss of neutral supply. Initial testing at the isolator suggested everything was present and correct—but the real fault was hidden inside the condenser unit.

After removing the casing and checking the internal terminations, we discovered that the neutral conductor had almost completely pulled away, with just a single strand appearing to remain connected.

The cable was correctly re-terminated before the electrical supply and air-conditioning equipment were tested. All units were then function-tested to confirm they were operating as they should. ✅

The isolator had been mounted directly onto the condenser unit, which may expose the fixed wiring and connections to additional movement and vibration. Ideally, the fixed isolator would be secured to the building, with a suitable flexible cable completing the connection to the equipment.

A full service of the air-conditioning system was also recommended to help maintain its performance and identify any other developing issues.

Electrical faults aren’t always obvious—sometimes everything can appear normal until you investigate a little deeper. 🔍

⚡️💡🔌🔦💰📐📏 #

Attended a property today to investigate an RCD that was tripping intermittently.
The customer had an EICR carried out around five years ago, but there was no reference to the garage consumer unit anywhere within the report. During my investigation, I found several areas of concern, including four cables terminated into a single 32A circuit breaker—none of which appeared to form a ring final circuit. Again, this hadn’t been identified on the previous report.
The installation still contains red and black wiring, with parts potentially around 50 years old. Age alone doesn’t make wiring unsafe, but it should prompt a thorough inspection and proper testing. Despite the issues now visible, the previous report recorded only three C3 observations.
An EICR isn’t just paperwork or a box-ticking exercise. People rely on these reports to understand the condition and safety of their electrical installation.
What is happening within our industry? Are inspections being given enough time, or have some people simply stopped caring about the responsibility that comes with signing these reports?
Customers deserve an honest and thorough assessment—not a certificate that provides false reassurance.
