G R Design Studio Carpentry Joinery Metalwork
Pro East Sussex I embarked on my professional journey at the age of 14, driven by a deep passion for working with wood.

My goal was to give new life to wood, transforming it from tree to a beautiful and functional form. I was fortunate to start as an apprentice under the guidance of a skilled roofer and carpenter in Normandy, Monsieur Camu. Over 8 years, I learned the traditional techniques of thatched roofing, slate and tile work, timber frames, and all aspects of carpentry. Monsieur Camu, a strict yet exemplary m

entor, instilled in me the values of precision and excellence. He not only taught me the craft but also became a father figure, shaping my career profoundly. Simultaneously, I completed 8 years of formal education at the Academies of Normandy and Orleans-Tours, specializing in roofing, carpentry, and joinery. I also delved into metalwork, showcasing my skills by winning a regional award in Zinguierie, a competition I was entered into by surprise. Throughout my early career, I collaborated with master craftsmen on renowned structures like Chartres Cathedral, Chateau de Versailles, and Chateau du Champ de Bataille, gaining invaluable experience in specialized work on these historic landmarks. For a decade, I managed my roofing and carpentry business in the South of France, overseeing projects and leading my own team. With 25 years of professional expertise, I continue to strive for perfection in every endeavour working with precision and care to satisfy and bring to material form the vision of my clients.

My hiStory
My professional journey began at the age of 14, driven by a deep passion for working with wood. As a child I had regularly wandered the forest with my best friend. One day, I broke a branch from a tree thoughtlessly and I immediately felt a deep sense of sadness, as if I had wounded the tree. It was at this tender age I became aware that the trees and plants spoke to me and my connection with them was real. I took that branch home and with the knife my grandfather had gifted me, I carved it into the shape of a hand transforming my remorse into something tangible and beautiful. My goal since that day was to give new life to wood, transforming it from tree into a beautiful and functional form. I knew I was to become a carpenter.

Fortunately for me I started as an apprentice under the guidance of a skilled master roofer and carpenter in Normandy, Monsieur Camu. Over 8 years, I learned the traditional techniques of thatched roofing, slate and tile work, timber frames, and all aspects of carpentry. Monsieur Camu, a strict yet exemplary mentor, instilled in me the values of precision and excellence. He was a hard man, no frills and the workshop was a rustic space, earthen floor & no facilities. He not only taught me the craft but also became a father figure, shaping my career profoundly.
Simultaneously, I completed 8 years of formal education at the Academies of Normandy and Orleans-Tours, specializing in roofing, carpentry, and joinery. At this time I also delved into metalwork, showcasing my skills by winning a regional award in Zinguierie (Zinc Specialist), a competition I was entered into by surprise by one of my coleagues.

Throughout my early career I collaborated with master craftsmen on renowned structures such as Chartres Cathedral, Chateau de Versailles, and Chateau du Champ de Bataille, gaining invaluable experience and insight in specialized work on these historic landmarks.
For a decade, I managed my roofing and carpentry business in the South of France, overseeing projects and leading my own team.
