Quick line up outside the workshop of the second batch of 4 now completed, including the 2 carvers. 8 down, just 4 more to do of this set of 12 Chippendale revival Mahogany dining chairs. The chairs are being stripped back and rebuilt due to soggy bottoms and questionable upholstery over the original pads. Fabric is Warner House Lusso velvet (Malachite). Looking lovely in the late afternoon light.

Exciting delivery today 😃. We have wanted to work with these fabrics for a long time. Now we have our sample book, so many very beautiful horsehair fabrics. Last week we had chance to visit the John Boyd Textiles stand festivalofupholstery. If you are local to us pop into our workshop Lannock Farm to find out more about these amazing fabrics. A perfect choice for your Georgian chair and more

Views from the benches, work underway here Highcroft Interiors Ltd. Working in tandem on more traditional dining chairs, matching seat heights. Particularly the two carvers which are the tallest frames. Need them to fit back under their table! Bit of caning underway too. One complete chair of the 2nd batch of four hiding under cover. Also a modern button back armchair underway too. Variety is the spice of life for upholsterers 😃. 😉

Sometimes it’s good to get things in perspective, a couple of cracking shots of the long barn during our upholstery classes Lannock Farm this week. Appreciating our lovely workshop. 😍. And lastly couldn’t resist sharing this photo of Tracy’s new project- weeny armchair, cute eh!

The dining chair refurb continues. Interestingly having completed 4 of the 12 chairs we discovered an issue. The chairs and their table are a “marriage” as they say. So they did not originally go together. Only when we dropped the first set back did the issue arise. All these chairs are already too tall for the table to allow sufficient knee height. Fortunately the four we completed recently will sit comfortably in the centre section of the wind out antique table. Challenge now is to improve comfort, without adding significantly to the height. So we have reduced the spring height to 3” from 4” (which we used in the first four), and reduced the amount of additional stuffing added over the old pads. So webbed from underneath again, added springs and reused the original pads with new hessian over. A small hair layer and split layer of needled felt. The result is a profile in line with the existing chairs which is about as good as we can get. Impossible to do much more as no scope to reduce the frame heights or raise the table (already on a chunky caster). Visiting customer tomorrow with this test pilot before cracking on with the other 7.

After a full strip back and rebuild the first batch of 12 dining chairs are looking resplendent in this lush Warner House Lusso Velvet (Malachite). With a bad case of soggy bottoms and barely any fillings anyway our customer was after more comfort. So we added springs and made sure during the rebuild we carefully measured at each stage to ensure they match. Although one chair frame of the four is slightly bigger. This is especially important as we have another eight to do and the set must match.

Looking forward to our summer break but a week or so to go yet. First we’ve got a traditional run of work through the workshop. A set of 12 dining chairs that we are adding springs to, as the customer found them too uncomfortable unsprung. Working through them in batches of 4. Reusing the stitched pads- back stuffing the sides along the springs and adding new hessian and restitching. They are going to be lovely as the fabric is a luscious teal velvet. But quite a bit of work to go before then. Meanwhile Harriet is finishing off the weeny nursing chair which is looking splendid in its new togs. If you are visiting Lannock Farm do pop your head in and say hi.

From the stuff to the stitched, the joy of a traditional arm pad 😃. One down, one to go. Excuse the clutter in the background, we are still in partial summer fayre set up mode. Workshop jobs are heavily leaning to the traditional at the moment, having had a run of modern work. It’s nice to get back into that vibe. life

Gone home today, this Danish lounge chair from the late 90s/early noughties has been recovered in Modelli Fabrics Concerto, Wedding Anniversary which is a perfect choice as it was a wedding present for our customers! And it’s in keeping with its original cheerful yellow theme. Thanks to Gareth Rees for spotting its origins.
