This 5-bed Hertfordshire cottage was once home to the Rothschilds' head gamekeeper.

Our part in its rear extension and refurb: full structural input, foundations included.

The interesting bits:

An asymmetrical oriel bay on the back of the house (a bay that projects out without reaching the ground)
Underpinning the rear wall, as the existing foundations were inadequate and the load on them was increasing

Treetops | South Moreton 🌿

A contemporary new-build home designed to make the most of its secluded setting - with plenty going on behind the scenes to make it work.

Treetops replaced a dilapidated dwelling on one of South Moreton's few secluded parcels, creating two new detached homes on the site.

dbstructural provided the structural engineering for the project, working alongside KW Architectural to bring the contemporary design together.

Finished in Western Red Cedar, the house combines extensive glazing, a brickwork plinth and clean modern forms - while the site's location within a flood zone meant careful consideration was required from an engineering and civils perspective.

The finished floor level was raised above the surrounding driveway and garden, with specialist membranes and drainage measures incorporated to help protect the property from potential groundwater and flooding.

With summer as warm as it was, it’s easy to forget just how wet our winters can be. But water has to go somewhere.

Surface water drainage needs to be considered from the earliest stages of design. Understanding the UK drainage hierarchy can help architects, developers and contractors make informed decisions about how rainwater should be managed and where it should ultimately be discharged.

Read more about the drainage hierarchy and the role of SuDS via the link in our bio. Alternatively, get in touch to discuss drainage design solutions for your project.

A new self-build farmhouse designed to sit naturally within its rural surroundings.
Located just outside Chilton in Oxfordshire, Skippets Stables is a unique new-build home forming part of an existing equestrian facility.
dbstructural worked alongside KW Architectural on the project, helping bring the ambitious architectural design into a practical, buildable proposal.

The house takes inspiration from a traditional Oxfordshire farmhouse, combining locally sourced brick and flint with oak detailing and contemporary features.
One of the standout elements is the 12m-wide sliding door opening to the rear, creating a strong connection between the open-plan living spaces and the surrounding landscape.

The result is a home that balances traditional materials and character with modern living, sustainability and plenty of natural light

Works have commenced this week on a new development in Ickleford, North Hertfordshire. Appointed by Peter David Homes, we provided structural, civil and highways design.

Working alongside Saunders Boston Architects, our team delivered some excellent solutions to navigate challenging ground conditions with varying substrates and potential contaminants at depth.

With construction now underway, it’s great to see the project move from design into delivery. We'll share more from this site as it progresses.

We’re pleased to be appointed to provide the detailed structural and drainage design for a new commercial development at Denham Green Nursery, Buckinghamshire.
Planning permission was granted in September for two new commercial buildings with ancillary office space. The development comprises two steel portal framed structures, including a large workshop unit incorporating a gantry crane.

The structural frame therefore needs to accommodate the additional loading and operational requirements associated with the crane.
Our involvement began pre-planning, when we were appointed to develop the site’s drainage strategy. Following planning approval, we’ve now been appointed to take the project through detailed structural and drainage design.

Design is currently underway and we look forward to seeing the project unfold.

Subsidence and flood risk are both challenges we're navigating in our latest project on Chauntry Close, Maidenhead.

Our team was appointed post planning to provide the full structural design and drainage design for a replacement dwelling within Flood Zone 3 adjacent to the River Thames.

With the site’s flood risk, the finished floor level has been raised to provide flood compensation volume beneath the footprint of the property. Piled foundations are being used due to the influence of nearby trees and the underlying London Clay substrate.

Having previously assisted the client with an insurance claim for subsidence at the original dwelling, this has given us a good understanding of the site's ground conditions and challenges.

Another example of how early consideration of site constraints can help inform a robust, practical design.

PROJECT UPDATE | Beaconsfield

Steady progress continues on this bespoke home in Beaconsfield.

These latest shots show the strip foundations poured and the substructure masonry now rising across the footprint - a good marker of how far the project has come since our last update.

It's always satisfying watching a design translate from paper into brick and block on site, and we're looking forward to sharing more as the structure continues to take shape over the coming weeks.
