How is a radon sump installed? 👷♂️🏠
A radon sump is one of the methods used to reduce radon levels in a property by creating a route for radon gas to be safely extracted from beneath the building.
A typical installation involves:
1️⃣ Assess the property – Understand the building construction, ground conditions and radon risk.
2️⃣ Choose the sump location – Identify the most suitable position to create effective extraction without compromising the building.
3️⃣ Install the sump – A suitable sump is formed beneath the floor, creating a collection point for radon gas in the sub-floor area.
4️⃣ Connect the extraction pipework – Pipework is installed from the sump to a suitable discharge point.
5️⃣ Install the extraction fan – Where active extraction is required, a specialist radon fan draws the gas from beneath the building and discharges it safely outside.
6️⃣ Seal and finish – The installation is sealed appropriately and the floor reinstated.
7️⃣ Test and verify – Radon levels will be monitored after installation to confirm that the system is achieving the required reduction.
⚠️ Important: Radon sump installations need to be designed around the individual building. The correct sump location, pipework, fan specification and discharge arrangement are all important to ensure the system works effectively.
