How is a radon sump installed? 👷‍♂️🏠

A radon sump is one of the methods used to reduce radon levels in a property by creating a route for radon gas to be safely extracted from beneath the building.

A typical installation involves:

1️⃣ Assess the property – Understand the building construction, ground conditions and radon risk.

2️⃣ Choose the sump location – Identify the most suitable position to create effective extraction without compromising the building.

3️⃣ Install the sump – A suitable sump is formed beneath the floor, creating a collection point for radon gas in the sub-floor area.

4️⃣ Connect the extraction pipework – Pipework is installed from the sump to a suitable discharge point.

5️⃣ Install the extraction fan – Where active extraction is required, a specialist radon fan draws the gas from beneath the building and discharges it safely outside.

6️⃣ Seal and finish – The installation is sealed appropriately and the floor reinstated.

7️⃣ Test and verify – Radon levels will be monitored after installation to confirm that the system is achieving the required reduction.

⚠️ Important: Radon sump installations need to be designed around the individual building. The correct sump location, pipework, fan specification and discharge arrangement are all important to ensure the system works effectively.

Radon is everywhere; formed from the uranium in all rocks and soils. Outdoors everywhere and indoors in many areas the radon levels are low and the risk to health is small.

The amount of radon is measured in becquerels per cubic metre of air (Bq m-3). The average level in UK homes is 20 Bq m-3.

For levels below 100 Bq m-3, your individual risk remains relatively low and not a cause for concern. However, the risk increases as the radon level increases.

Radioactivity is where unstable elements, such as naturally occurring uranium, thorium and radon, break down; energy is released and different elements formed.

The new elements may also be unstable so the process is repeated until a stable element is formed. The energy given off is called radiation and can be alpha or beta particles or gamma rays. Alpha particles are more harmful than beta particles or gamma rays. This is because alpha particles contain more energy and are absorbed over a smaller area.

We are all exposed to radiation from natural and man-made sources. Just 20 Bq m-3 (the average radon level in UK homes) gives us half our exposure to radiation from all sources. Higher radon levels give higher exposures: that is why it is important to find out the levels in your home and in your school or workplace.

Home Test Kits (£39.60) include instructions on where and how to place the detectors in your home and detectors are to be left in place for 3 months for a verified laboratory report. (shorter term screenings are also available).

Our passive detectors are simple to place—usually one in the living room and one in the bedroom. (and basement, when required).
