Hi my name is Alan Dayman (Al) and for 40 years my family have been growers of plants and trees from our 11 acre site in Cossington, Leicestershire. Every year Derrys Nurseries opens our gates to customers looking for a tray of pansies, a pot and compost as well as trees and stone for your garden. I have seen Nurseries and Garden centres change over the years and many local sites are closing due t

o the rising costs of operating. At Derry’s we have diversified and made use of new technologies and skills and with my son Ash we were able to move into new areas such as Tree Surgery. As a result of this we were able to recycle the trees that had to be taken down and turn them into logs for fuel. Many people have tried different methods to keep cut logs dry and reduce the moisture contained within the log such as Kiln Drying. We have found that when processing Kiln Dried logs it increases the cost to the customer dramatically. We had to find away to speed up the drying process without adding cost to the customer and to make cut logs a cost effective alternative to gas and coal. As we have been growers for 40 years we have a lot of onsite poly tunnels that are designed to keep the heat in and the cold out. Typically the Kiln Drying process uses fuel to heat the logs and remove moisture down to under 20%. Using a DR Meter, Moisture meter we are able to provide supplied Hardwood logs to you with moisture content of around 20% and in most cases less. We don’t need to impact the environment by using gas or electricity to dry logs. We are making use of our existing facilities. The speed in which our process dries logs is exceptionally fast meaning faster, lower cost turnaround times.

It’s time for the cyclamen. Perfect under trees, they flower through autumn and winter. They are frost hardy and come back every year

This little loropetalum cloud pruned tree belongs to our customer. It’s looking super cute and the dark purple foliage is glowing in the sunshine. They have a really striking bright pink flower in spring 💕 we LOVE to be tagged and mentioned in any photos of Derrys plants thriving in your gardens 🫶 wishing you all a peaceful Sunday evening and maybe a roast dinner 😉

The bees love Big Al’s dahlias 🐝 they are such a great plant for this season you just keep deadheading and they will keep flowering until the first frosts. Then you can either lift them and store the tubers in a frost free place for next year or leave them in the ground and protect them from the frosts with mulch. There is a LOT of debate about which way is best 😂 and we’ll do a video on that at the right time, but for now they offer so much autumn colour, just enjoy the flowers!! 😍

Oh dear Big Al! 🤦‍♀️ who would like to caption this?! 😂
