Keypad, fob, intercom or app? How to choose the right way into your driveway

There isn't a single right answer, it depends how you use your gate day to day.
Here's how the main options stack up:

🔸 Keypad: simple and reliable, good if you want to give a code to family or regular visitors without handing out a device
🔸 Fob: quick and familiar, ideal if it's mainly your own vehicles coming and going
🔸 Intercom: lets you see and speak to whoever's there before you let them in, particularly useful for deliveries and unexpected callers
🔸 App control: opens the gate from your phone wherever you are, handy if you're often out or want to let someone in remotely

Every gate that leaves our workshop is made to order.

CAD drawings first, so you know exactly what you're getting. Then it's built in house by our own engineers, not bought in from a catalogue.

That's been the way since 1998. It's slower than picking something off a shelf, but it's the reason our gates fit properly and last.

Another bespoke installation completed in Ravenstone, Leicestershire. 👏

We recently worked with a local developer to design, manufacture and install a complete gate and access control solution for a new development.

October is when the parcels start piling up. Is your driveway ready for it?

Now we're into October, the online shopping really picks up pace. Early Christmas orders, weekly food deliveries, the odd parcel left "safe" by the bins, it all starts landing on driveways up and down the country, often when nobody's in to answer the door.

An open driveway with no way of controlling who comes and goes isn't just a security gap, it's an invitation. A gate with a video intercom changes that completely. You see who's there, you talk to them, and you decide whether they come in, all from your phone if you're not even home.

It also means couriers and regular visitors aren't left standing at a closed gate wondering what to do. Set up access properly once and it just works, delivery after delivery, right through to Christmas.

It's one of the first questions we get asked, and the honest answer is it depends on your driveway, not personal preference alone. A few things that usually settle it:

🔸 How much space you've got in front of the gate line for a swing arc
🔸 Whether the ground slopes, which can rule out sliding tracks
🔸 How wide the opening needs to be for the vehicles using it
🔸 Whether there's a wall or fence line a sliding gate can run alongside
🔸 How the gate needs to look against the rest of the property

The clocks go back in four weeks. Your driveway will feel it first

It doesn't feel like it yet, but the last Sunday in October will tip us into properly dark evenings, the kind where you're pulling onto the drive in the dark by half five.

That change tends to catch people out every year. The bins go out in daylight one week and pitch black the next, and the front of the house goes from clearly visible to barely lit almost overnight.

An electric gate closes that gap before it opens. It's a physical barrier at the boundary of the property, working alongside your lighting rather than instead of it, and it means the drive isn't just sitting open and unguarded once the sun's down by teatime.

As the evenings shorten, more of the working day happens in the dark, and that includes the hours your site sits unattended. A few things worth checking before autumn properly sets in:

🔸 Entrances and gate lines are actually lit, not just the car park
🔸 Access can be managed remotely rather than relying on someone being on site out of hours
🔸 Your gate system talks to your existing CCTV and alarms rather than sitting apart from them
🔸 There's an actual record of who came in and when, not just a shared code
🔸 Former staff or contractors don't still have working access

None of this means a full system overhaul. Often it's a case of tightening up what's already there.

Will it slow down visitors and deliveries?

No. Most people are through in seconds with a keypad, fob or intercom, quicker than fumbling for a buzzer at a front door.

Does it mean ripping up my driveway?

Usually not. In most cases the gate fits around what's already there. We survey first and tell you straight if anything more is needed.

Is it actually going to improve security, or just look the part?

Both. A properly fitted, force tested electric gate is a genuine barrier, not just a smart looking one.
