What is Soft Washing?
Soft washing is a cleaning method that uses low-pressure water mixed with tailored cleaning solutions (most commonly biocides for algae/moss, and surfactants for grime). Instead of blasting the surface, the liquid is applied gently and allowed to dwell so it can break down biological growth and stains.
Why it’s better for render and delicate surfaces (vs. pressure washing):
Lower risk of damage: Render, exterior coatings, and many delicate materials can be scored, eroded, or loosened by high-force jets. Soft washing’s gentler application reduces the chance of surface stripping and pitting.
Better for biological growth: Algae, lichen, and moss often root into the surface. Soft washing’s chemicals kill the organisms, so regrowth is less likely than when you only remove the top layer with water.
Less water intrusion: Pressure washing can drive water and debris into cracks, joints, and permeable materials, potentially worsening damp problems. Soft washing is designed to clean without forcing water deep.
More controlled results: The dwell time and formulation are adjusted to the surface and contamination level, making it easier to achieve a clean finish without over-aggressive action.
In short, soft washing cleans render effectively while protecting it, extending the life and appearance of delicate exterior surfaces.
