A really worthwhile day at Healthcare Estates 2026 in Manchester yesterday, with plenty of interesting discussions about where the healthcare sector is heading. Two themes in particular continued to stand out for me:
Artificial Intelligence – There is clearly a growing focus on how AI can be harnessed to improve the planning, design and management of healthcare estates. The potential is enormous, although translating that into practical benefits will be the real test. My view is that those that can will thrive, those that don't will be left behind.
Neighbourhood Health Centres – A great deal of interest in the future delivery of these facilities and the opportunities they could create for more accessible, community-based healthcare. The big question seems to be not so much if, but when well see meaningful progress.
From an architectural perspective, both present some exciting opportunities, but also challenges that will require collaboration, innovation and a healthy dose of pragmatism!
Just as importantly, it was good to catch up with a number of contacts across the healthcare sector. Some very encouraging meetings and positive conversations, which made the day particularly worthwhile.
I came away feeling optimistic about the opportunities ahead. Now we need to see some of that ambition translated into real projects!
What did others attending take away from the event?
