Last month, for the fourth year in a row, the Den Architecture team took part in our annual charity walk in support of Mind.

This year, we completed the Malham Cove Circular, and it was a fantastic day as always, bringing the team together outside the office for a cause that means a lot to us.

We’re delighted to share that we raised £1,173, which is 234% of our original £500 target.

A huge thank you to everyone who donated and supported us. Mind does vital work providing mental health support, advice and awareness, and we’re proud to have raised money for such an important charity.

Staveley is a scheme of 76 new homes near Knaresborough, currently under construction.

Located in the picturesque village of Staveley, the project achieved planning approval in May 2024 and is now progressing on site.

For Den Architecture, larger housing schemes like this require a careful balance between creating much-needed new homes and responding to the character of the existing village.

The design process needs to consider the wider site layout, movement, streetscape, house types, landscaping and the relationship between new homes and their surroundings.

This project is housing design, but at a village scale, where context and delivery need to work hand in hand.

Designing new homes next to a Grade II* Listed building requires a carefully considered approach.

At Ashdown House, the design approach was shaped by proportions, the setting of the new build elements, and the choice of materials, allowing the new homes to sit comfortably within the wider estate.

This was a challenging project, but one that demonstrates the value of a considered architectural response in sensitive residential locations.

Ashdown House shows how new housing can be designed with care, creating much-needed homes while respecting the character and significance of its historic setting.

In March 2025 we received planning approval on a project neighbouring the Grade II* Listed Ashdown House in East Sussex, delivering 45 new homes.

Securing consent in a sensitive setting requires a clear understanding of heritage context, planning considerations and design quality.

The architecture needs to feel appropriate to its surroundings without becoming a pastiche, and the overall layout needs to respect the character and setting of the existing estate.

This kind of project was a challenging experience, navigating a very sensitive site, where design, heritage and planning need to be carefully aligned.

Ashdown House shows how new housing can be approached with restraint, sensitivity and a strong understanding of place.

Snowbird Close is a development of 3 detached family homes in Burn, near Selby for our client

The scheme was designed to respond sensitively to its village setting, creating a small-scale development that feels appropriate to its context, while still providing high-quality modern homes.

Each home has been planned with generous private gardens, well-proportioned living spaces and a strong relationship to its surroundings.

Mire Syke Lane and Shepherds Court are two small residential developments in Scotton, each comprising 5 detached traditionally styled homes near Harrogate.

Both projects reflect our experience in designing and delivering housing that responds carefully to its setting, where scale, materiality, landscape and proportion all play an important role.

Smaller housing schemes often need a particularly considered approach. Each home needs to feel individual and generous, while still working together as part of a coherent development.

With traditional forms, familiar materials and carefully planned layouts, these projects demonstrate how new housing can feel settled within its surroundings, rather than imposed on them.

Together, Mire Syke Lane and Shepherds Court are good examples of Den’s long-standing experience in small-scale residential design, from early concept through to completion.

Mind is a charity close to our hearts, doing vital work to support mental health and make sure people do not have to face things alone.

This year, we’ll be taking on the Malham Cove Circular, bringing the team together for a day out of the office, a few tired legs and, most importantly, a very worthwhile cause.

We would be incredibly grateful for any donations, big or small, using the JustGiving link below.
