⚠️ A couple of dangerous discoveries from yesterday’s jobs…
One of these was an undersized cable supplying a garage, with a 13A EV charger plugged into it regularly. The other was badly overheated wiring and connections that had clearly been getting hot for quite some time.
You can see from the photos that the insulation has started to burn and melt. In most cases, this happens because the cable or connections are carrying more current than they were designed for, or because protective devices haven’t been correctly selected.
This is exactly why cable sizing, correct circuit protection, and proper installation matter so much.
A cable that’s too small for the load can overheat long before a fuse or breaker trips. Add in loose connections, ageing accessories, or higher-demand equipment like EV chargers, and it can quickly become a fire risk.
What’s important to remember is that a lot of installations like this may have been considered “acceptable” 20+ years ago. But electrical regulations change regularly for good reason — homes now use far more power than they used to, and safety standards improve as we learn more from real-world failures.
It’s likely that many older garages, sheds, and outbuildings were never designed with modern loads in mind. Things like EV charging, heaters, tumble dryers, hot tubs, and workshop equipment can all push old wiring beyond its safe limits.
The best way to deal with this is to have older installations properly inspected before adding extra load onto existing circuits. It can usually be sorted fairly quickly once the issues are identified.
