BUMBLEBEE NEST SAFELY REMOVED & RELOCATED

Whilst attending a property in the Pontefract area of Wakefield where our client was having a full rewire carried out, the electrician noticed a large amount of bumblebee activity within the loft space.

Upon inspection, an active bumblebee nest was discovered. With the property's roof due to be completely replaced within the next two days, it was vital that the nest was safely removed and relocated to prevent any harm coming to the bees.

Our team successfully removed and relocated the entire nest in under 20 minutes from arriving on site, ensuring both the bees and the upcoming roofing works could continue safely.

WASP ACTIVITY ON THE RISE

Due to the recent heatwave and the warm weather we’ve experienced over the past couple of weeks, wasp activity has increased significantly. The higher temperatures make wasps far more active, meaning you’ll notice them more frequently around gardens, bushes, hedges, properties and workplaces.

As colonies continue to grow throughout the summer, wasps can also become more defensive and aggressive, particularly if their nest is disturbed. If you’re seeing large numbers of wasps flying in and out of bushes, rooflines, wall cavities or around your property, there is a good chance a nest is nearby.

HIDDEN WASP NEST FOUND DURING HEDGE TRIMMING - RAWCLIFFE , GOOLE

This morning we attended a domestic property in the Rawcliffe area where our client had been trimming back a hedge and unfortunately uncovered an active wasp nest. During the incident, our client sustained multiple wasp stings before being able to move away from the area safely.

Upon arrival, we carried out a full assessment of the nest and implemented a professional wasp treatment. The nest was then fully removed to eliminate any further risk to the occupants and anyone using the garden.

With the nest now eradicated, our client can safely resume cutting back and maintaining the hedge line. This serves as a reminder to always take extra care when trimming dense hedges, shrubs and vegetation during the wasp season, as nests can often remain hidden until disturbed.

Rodent Investigation & Drainage Assessment- Adel, Leeds

A site inspection was carried out at a property in Adel, Leeds following reports of rat activity in the rear garden.

The client had previously employed another pest control company who implemented a baiting programme. However, our inspection found that the source of the infestation had not been identified.

During the investigation, active rat activity was traced to a manhole chamber in the rear garden. Further inspection revealed a redundant drainage pipe providing rats with access and harbourage. Evidence of tunnelling from the manhole into the surrounding garden confirmed the drainage defect as the point of emergence.

A riddance programme has now been implemented, including monitoring, trapping and targeted control measures to reduce and eliminate the infestation.

Recommendations have been provided regarding the drainage defects identified. Corrective drainage works will be required to prevent future infestations and support long-term control.

Without rectifying the drainage defects, there remains a risk of continued rat ingress and recurring infestations.

MAJOR FLEA INFESTATION – NORMANTON, WAKEFIELD

Earlier today we attended a flat in the Normanton area of Wakefield following reports of a severe flea infestation.

The landlord advised that up to nine cats had previously been living within the one-bedroom flat. Upon inspection, it quickly became apparent just how serious the infestation was. As shown in the attached video, hundreds of fleas could be seen jumping onto our protective suit within seconds of entering the property.

Heavy flea infestations like this can take time to eliminate due to the flea life cycle, which is why a structured treatment programme is essential.

We’ve now carried out an initial fogging treatment to achieve a rapid knockdown of the active flea population and will be returning in 14 days to carry out a follow-up treatment to target any newly emerged fleas.

FLOUR/GRAIN MITE INFESTATION – FEATHERSTONE, WAKEFIELD

This morning we attended a domestic property in the Featherstone area of Wakefield following reports of tiny insects spreading throughout the kitchen and across multiple food items.

Upon inspection, this was identified as a flour/grain mite infestation which had originated from contaminated dog treats stored within the property.

With the recent warmer weather and heatwave conditions, breeding cycles for flour mites can rapidly increase, often doubling or even tripling in a short period of time due to the heat and humidity.

We have now carried out a professional fogging treatment throughout the affected areas and removed all contaminated food sources, including the dog treats responsible for the infestation.

This is another reminder of how quickly stored product pests can spread during warmer months if contaminated items are left within kitchens or cupboards.

TREE BEES OFTEN MISTAKEN FOR WASPS

We’ve recently had many call-outs across Yorkshire for “wasp activity” around guttering, soffits & bird boxes, but many are actually European tree bees.

These bees are harmless pollinators commonly found nesting in bird boxes, roof voids and small gaps around properties during warmer months. Unlike wasps, they are generally non-aggressive and beneficial to the environment.

However, we understand that heavy bee activity around homes, patios or play areas can still cause concern.

If bee activity around your property is becoming an issue i.e you’re bird boxes etc, we can assist with safe removal and relocation where possible. Please note a call-out fee applies for attendance and assessment.

PIGEON GUANO & BALCONY DEEP CLEAN – LEEDS CITY CENTRE

An afternoon spent over in the Leeds City Centre area carrying out a deep clean and decontamination of a balcony area within an apartment block due to heavy feral pigeon activity.

Large amounts of pigeon guano, old nesting materials and contaminated items had built up across the balcony creating both a health hazard and unpleasant living conditions for the occupants. Pigeon fouling can carry harmful bacteria, fungal spores and parasites, especially once left untreated over a prolonged period.

All contaminated nesting materials and waste were safely removed and disposed of correctly. The full balcony area was then deep cleaned and treated using professional biocidal disinfectants to sanitise the affected surfaces and reduce the risk of harmful pathogens remaining within the area.

Following the clean-up, further recommendations were also put forward to help prevent future pigeon activity and nesting within the balcony area.

Unfortunately for this landlord in the Normanton area of Wakefield, they purchased a building which was suffering from a heavy flea infestation due to multiple cats previously living within the property. Infestations like this can quickly spread throughout empty flats and communal areas if left untreated.
