We're proud to be confirmed as a delivery partner for Universal United Kingdom Resort in Bedfordshire, one of the most significant tourism and regeneration developments ever undertaken in the UK.

As the first Universal-branded theme park and resort destination in the UK and Europe, the development has the potential to generate almost £50bn of economic benefit, support 20,000 construction jobs and create a further 8,000 direct jobs once operational. The resort is expected to open in 2031.

Beyond its scale, the project has the potential to create lasting opportunities for businesses, communities and future generations across Bedfordshire and the wider UK.

At Wates, we believe that creating a positive legacy means investing not only in the projects we deliver, but also in the people and communities around them.

This summer on the AESC UK project, our teams have been involved in a range of initiatives as part of Community & Conservation Month, our Summer Start Right campaign, and engagement activities supporting the redevelopment of the SSSTS Supervisor Training programme.

From reinforcing a back-to-basics approach to safety and wellbeing, to supporting local charities, community gardens and volunteer-led organisations across Sunderland, our people have taken time to make a meaningful difference both on and off site.

We have also worked with industry partners to help shape future supervisor training, ensuring the learning experience remains relevant, engaging and effective for the next generation of construction leaders.

A huge thank you to everyone who contributed their time, expertise and enthusiasm throughout the summer.

Happy birthday The Big Issue!

For 35 years, you have championed people facing poverty and social exclusion, providing a hand up, not a hand out, and creating opportunities that empower individuals to build brighter futures.

Congratulations on this incredible milestone and the positive change you've created over the last 35 years. We're proud to partner with you as the lead sponsor of the Big Issue Top 100 Changemakers, and we look forward to continuing our work together.

To mark this special anniversary, Big Issue has released a dedicated 35th anniversary edition of their magazine. We encourage you to buy a copy from your local vendor to learn more about the amazing work they do and how they are making a real difference in communities across the UK.

We're proud to have recently welcomed our newest cohort of apprentices and graduates, who are beginning their careers across Residential, Construction, SES Engineering Services, WPS and Finance.

During their induction, they heard from Chairman Tim Wates on our history and values, and Chief Executive Eoghan O'Lionaird on our purpose and ambitions. Through interactive workshops and team challenges, they built connections, developed confidence and experienced the collaboration that underpins life at Wates.

We're excited to see the contribution this talented group will make across our business.

Sunshine, a packed marquee, plenty of laughter and a well-earned opportunity to reflect on an incredible journey.

Last month, colleagues from Wates Construction and SES came together in Sunderland, alongside members of the Wates Enterprise Board and Executive Committee, to celebrate the people behind the AESC UK project and recognise the dedication, resilience and teamwork that have helped deliver the UK's first battery gigafactory over the last four years, supporting the future of UK manufacturing and creating a lasting legacy for the North East.

Colleagues heard from Chairman Tim Wates, Chief Executive Eoghan O'Lionaird, and SES Technology and Wates Advanced Manufacturing leaders Eddie Tribe and Chris Catterick, who reflected on the challenges overcome, partnerships built and the incredible contribution of everyone involved. Joining the celebrations were Executive Managing Directors Steff Battle and Rob Clifford.

Following the celebration, members of the Wates Enterprise Board and Executive Committee joined guided tours of the facility, led by the project team. The tours offered a first-hand view of the scale, complexity and quality of the UK's first state-of-the-art battery gigafactory, bringing to life the remarkable journey from a blank sheet of paper to one of the most significant advanced manufacturing facilities in the country.

While the afternoon was a chance to celebrate how far we've come, it was also an opportunity to look ahead. The experience, expertise and relationships developed through the AESC UK project are already helping to shape future opportunities across the advanced manufacturing and data centre sectors.

A proud day for everyone involved and a fitting celebration of the people who have helped turn an ambitious vision into reality.

Special thanks to The Duck House Pantry for helping make the afternoon one to remember.
