Apprenticeship Days: Where it all Began!! 👦⏳🪵🛠⏳🏚️
⏳This week I am going to look way back to my apprentice days learning my craft 18 years ago being taught by one of my now best friends . Back in my apprentice days I was taught how to use essential hand skills and old school joinery techniques that will always stand the test of time.
🪵One of my very first projects I was tasked to make a bedside table with a drawer not knowing at the time this was being made for myself. Everything had to be done by hand all the joints hand cut, using a tenon saw, panel saw, coping saw, chisels and my wooden mallet. Only machinery used was to machine the sapele/meranti up square.
🛠 Sapele Frame was constructed using hand-cut mitred haunched mortice and tenons. Meranti side panels grooved/rebated in the sides and back. Drawer box constructed using hand-cut dovetail joints all round with a plywood base grooved in. Small sapele blocks were glued underneath the drawer to provide strength over time.
⏳Test of time, over the last 18 years this table has certainly stood the test of time being moved to 3 different homes, bumps, scrapes, spillages etc etc. Even though there is the odd mark and stain (which needs a little sand and re-oil to bring it back to life) all the joints are as rock solid as the day it was made. No joints have opened up over the years or been any issues with the quality and workmanship that went into this.
🏚️Workshop setups and tools used have certainly changed but nothing can out perform the core values and rules of traditional joinery.
Every Craftsman started out somewhere and made numerous mistakes in their journey to becoming one of the best in their craft. Being creative, there's always an exciting new project to work on and learn from and I am really looking forward being able to pass my knowledge on to the next generation of Craftsmen Joiners.
