Chimney Sweep and Maintenance
(1)

🔥 It’s not always just about sweeping chimneys! 🧹🪵

Another bit of stove maintenance for Trident Chimney Sweep! 🔱

The original fire cement around this stovepipe had started to crack and fail, leaving gaps around the connections.

The gap at the top was far too large for fire cement alone, so a 10mm black stove rope seal was used to provide a more suitable seal.

At the bottom, the old, deteriorating fire cement was removed and replaced with a fresh, thin layer to reseal the connection. 🔥

It’s these little maintenance jobs that can make a big difference to the safety and performance of your stove! 👌🏽

2,3 and 4 of the 5 swept today! 🔥🪵

Some can be swept through a simple access hatch, others require just the baffle plate removing… and then there are those where practically every firebrick needs to come out, starting from the bottom, just to gain access! 😅

No two jobs are ever quite the same… but all five are swept and ready for burning season! 🔥

Lovely Clock multi-fuel stove given its annual sweep and service 🔥

A thorough sweep and clean, with the firebox stripped down and a full set of fresh firebricks fitted, replacing the old worn and damaged set.

All cleaned out, rebuilt and ready for the burning season. 🔥🪵

Regular sweeping isn’t just about clearing the flue, it’s also a great opportunity to spot wear and deterioration inside the appliance before it becomes a bigger problem.

🔱 WHEN A ROUTINE SWEEP DOESN’T QUITE GO TO PLAN… 🔥

This is EXACTLY why you should have your stove swept and inspected annually!

What started as a routine sweep quickly turned into something more concerning when I attempted to remove the stove’s baffle plate.

It wouldn’t lift. It wouldn’t budge. Something clearly wasn’t right. 🤔

Further investigation revealed that the stove pipe had dropped, dislodging the metal baffle from its supporting lugs and leaving both resting on top of the vermiculite baffle.

The result? A compromised flue connection and a potential risk to the safe operation of the stove. ⚠️

After explaining the issue to the customer, I contacted the original installer, who agreed to attend that afternoon to investigate and rectify the problem.

I completed the required flue sweep and left the vermiculite bricks out, ready for their arrival.

As a qualified chimney sweep, I made the professional decision to leave the remedial work to the installer rather than attempt it myself, potentially compromising any existing warranty.

Later that afternoon, the customer confirmed that the installer had attended and successfully rectified the issue. 🙌

THE IMPORTANT TAKEAWAY?

Your annual sweep isn’t just about removing soot. It’s also an opportunity to identify potential faults, deterioration and safety concerns before they become something far more serious.

Not quite a textbook sweep, but a perfect example of why regular stove and chimney maintenance matters!

A clean flue is important. A safe, correctly functioning stove is essential. 🔥
