⭐️Lime pointing and plastering⭐️

All gypsum plaster removed including insulated plasterboard. Uncovered some dry rot and some very damp walls on a lovely cottage in Bishopstone.

The customers loved the look of the chalk so we changed the plan - rebuilt some areas then a hot lime mortar was used to do some pointing. On other areas a three coat lime work with a smooth finish was applied to areas where the stone was not so good.

💥Lime Plastering to solve damp issues💥
👍 - All cement render and tanking removed.
👍 - brickwork and chalk walls repaired
👍 - insulated lime base coat on window wall
👍 - traditional 3 coat lime work on other walls
👍 - lime putty skim coat applied to all walls.

👌 - All this allows the solid walls to work as they are intended to.

❌ - No chemicals drilled into or painted onto the walls. Which eventually destroy the soft chalk and bricks.

Ongoing job in Aldbourne.

There were a few issues going on here and when doing this sort of work I always look on the inside and the outside of your homes to work out what they are - it’s normally a combination of things. I can then make a plan.

The issues on this job were:
- The incorrect materials had been used on the walls trapping moisture
- The new (ish) concrete floor had bridged the plaster
- Incorrect paint

The cement render has all been removed carefully. While doing this I also removed a fair amount of Limelite renovating plaster - be aware of using this product, it contains cement and other additives.

When doing this sort of work there is no need for damp proofing, chemicals or tanking as your stone/brickwork will still be wet, which means they are cold too.

The best way is to apply traditional materials that work with your home and don’t damage it and will actually
work for another 150+ years.

😢 Dampproofing and tanking work ruining another traditionally built solid wall home 🤦.

Local job in Baydon.

This house had some damp proofing work completed not too long ago. Unfortunately it has already showed signs of failure.

The incorrect materials for this 300+ old cottage have been gently removed. Some areas had to be rebuilt and pointed due to the damage of moisture being trapped in the walls by the tanking.

I have applied a lime water to consolidate the mortar joints and It’s now ready for 3 coat traditional Lime work using local aggregates and horse hair from the local stables.

Using a three coat lime render and plaster will solve the damp / condensation issues and make the room feel warm again.

On old solid wall homes, it’s so important to use the correct traditional materials to cure/prevent problems.

Trapping and blocking moisture in walls by using damp proofing / tanking ends up causing more damage on solid walls - So avoid tanking and modern materials.

💥Traditional Lime plastering/ rendering/ pointing - including all aspects of modern plastering 💥

This cottage in Aldbourne had been pointed in sand and cement. This was trapping a lot of moisture in the walls and destroying the soft chalk and soft red bricks.

I gently removed the incorrect pointing, replaced some of the bricks that had spoiled and then managed to save the larger chalk blocks, by swapping them and reversing them in some places. I also had to rebuild parts of the gable end.

I tried to reuse and save as much of the original materials as possible.

I then finished it with a lovely hot lime mortar, slaked and mixed on site using local aggregates.

💥Local Plasterer 💥

Both of these jobs have been completed in Aldbourne.

1. External - rebuilding and repairing chalk stone and brick followed by a re point using hot lime mortar (a full post to come on this one)

2. Internal - removed sand and cement render and gypsum plaster, that caused a lot of damp damage including dry rot. All repaired using insulating lime render followed by a lime putty skim coat. This stops damp damaging the walls and keeps the room warm and damp free - on solid walls it’s vitally important to use the correct materials to prevent damage to the building and your health.

⭐️Lime Pointing and painting ⭐️

The pointing and paint choice on old solid walls is vitally important.

The pointing needs to be a lime mortar and paint needs to be breathable. The choice of paint is a minefield as a lot of companies claim that their products are good for older buildings, however, if you look closer you will see a lot of them are not great and have nasty additives added to them which compromises your walls. This goes for solid brick and stone walls etc.

Check the little video out on my previous post. Below are some progress pictures, started to remove the sand and cement mortar on the front and gable end of this cottage in Aldbourne. You can see the damage the incorrect pointing has done to the chalk and red bricks.

I’ll be repointing it all in a hot lime mix and replacing some of the damaged stone and bricks.
