Today is World Mental Health Day, and it’s one that matters to our industry.
Imagine a city with 150,000 affordable homes, 78 new schools, 13 GP surgeries and a large hospital. Now imagine it will never be built.
That’s The Lost City, a campaign by On The Tools. It shows what the 7,000 construction workers lost to su***de over the last decade could have built. The su***de rate in construction is four times the national average.
At KHG, our engineers work on sites and in people’s homes and businesses every day. Trades can be tough: long hours, pressure, time away from family, and a culture that often says “just crack on.” Talking about it shouldn’t be seen as weakness.
So today, a few small things:
✔ Ask your mate, colleague or engineer “Are you okay?” and mean it
✔ Listen without trying to fix it
✔ Know where support is
If you work in the trade and you’re struggling, Band of Builders offers free, confidential counselling: https://bit.ly/TheLostCityCounselling. You can also call Samaritans free on 116 123, any time.
