A busy month across HSP and HSP Commercial, with six projects moving through their programmes at different stages. Oak framing, first-fix and joinery have been progressing on our residential builds, while structural openings and new windows have been transforming kitchen and living spaces elsewhere. On our listed property, masonry repairs and lime work continue ahead of traditional plastering, built to sit with the original character rather than stand out from it. Our Commercial team has been working to a tight school holiday programme, while other sites move into second-fix, decorating and finishing stages as they head towards completion. Restoration, residential and commercial - all pushing forward this August.

This month’s recognition goes to Marc Ruddy, presented by our Residential Director, Haydn.

An expert bricklayer with the versatility to turn his hand to pretty much anything on site, Marc’s the kind of tradesman every team needs: skilled, dependable and always willing to get stuck in wherever he’s needed. His work rate and attention to detail set the standard, and his loyalty and hard graft haven’t gone unnoticed.

Craftsmanship like this is what keeps our sites moving and our standards high. Well earned, Marc.

HSP – Knutsford, Cheshire

HSP is looking for two ambitious individuals to join our team as Apprentice Joiners.

This is an excellent opportunity to begin a career in joinery with HSP, working on prestigious, high-end residential and heritage projects across Cheshire and the surrounding areas.

This isn’t an apprenticeship where you’ll spend your time doing basic labouring. You’ll work alongside experienced HSP joiners and craftsmen, learning the trade properly and gaining hands-on experience across a wide range of quality projects.

What you’ll learn

First and second fix joinery

Traditional and bespoke joinery

Oak and structural timber work

Kitchens and high-end interior finishes

Doors, frames, skirting and architraves

Heritage and period property work

Reading drawings and setting out

Professional site standards and workmanship

We’re looking for people who are hard-working, reliable, practical and genuinely interested in becoming highly skilled joiners.

Applicants must be local to Knutsford or the immediate surrounding area and able to reliably get to work each morning.

Previous construction experience isn’t essential. Attitude, reliability and willingness to learn are far more important.

For the right candidates, this is an opportunity to learn a skilled trade, gain recognised qualifications and build a long-term career with HSP.

LLANFOI COTTAGE – WORK IN PROGRESS

Restoration continues at this Grade II listed cottage.

Underfloor heating pipework laid true beneath the oak. Lime and stone repaired by hand, taking care of what’s already there. Screed going down as the next stage takes shape.

Traditional materials. Specialist methods. A listed building respected, not rushed.

Still plenty of work ahead, but the character’s staying exactly where it should.

Choosing the right builder makes or breaks a project. Most issues we hear about come down to poor planning, poor communication, or picking on price alone.

Cheapest quote isn’t always best value, missing detail means variations down the line, and variations cost more than the job would’ve in the first place.

Look for relevant experience, a clear process from day one, and pricing that’s upfront about scope and exclusions. That’s what separates a contractor from a builder who’s actually going to deliver.
