As with so many local sectors, we depend on continuous high quality young entrants joining the construction sector each year.
We are always very pleased to support Developing the Young Workforce Orkney, who work tirelessly to support local young people and employers.

It was our pleasure to host Stromness Academy S3 pupils, and we look forward to seeing some progress to work experience placements with us next year.

Last week, a group of S3 pupils from Stromness Academy visited Orkney Builders' site on Cairston Road to learn more about careers in the construction industry.

The event was originally due to take place during the school's Careers Week in February, but had been postponed. Part of the week of activity is to give all S3 pupils the opportunity to visit a workplace, so we were delighted to be able to work with Orkney Builders to re-schedule this visit.

Pupils were able to see around the site, visiting one of the newly finished homes. They were able to speak to staff and learn more about the different careers available with a construction company and all the trades involved in building a house.

We’re delighted to be working with Orkney Housing Association on the delivery of 41 new affordable homes at Walliwall, Kirkwall.

We’re proud to help deliver more high-quality, energy-efficient homes for the community. 🏠

We are delighted to exchange contracts 📑 for another 41 affordable homes 🏠🏘️to be built at Walliwall, Kirkwall by Orkney Builders (Contractors) Limited over the next 2 years 🏗️👷‍♂️.
These will include 28 for traditional, Social Rent, 4 for first-time buyer home ownership and 9 for Key Worker/MMR rent.

All these high quality, energy-efficient homes will be built and owned locally, with the rental income helping us - Orkney's community-owned Housing Association - to continue developing and improving homes as we have over the last 40 years.

These homes have significant grant funding from The Scottish Government and are delivered in partnership as part of the Orkney Islands Council Strategic Housing Investment Plan and part-funded by our wonderful Community Housing Bond investors.

It was great to welcome Liam McArthur to our Walliwall site last week during Scottish Apprenticeship Week 👷‍♂️🔧

It was a fantastic chance to showcase the work our team are doing and highlight the importance of apprenticeships in developing the next generation of skilled tradespeople in our community.

Liam took the time to meet with some of our apprentices, learn more about the project, and see first-hand the opportunities apprenticeships create within the construction industry.

On 26th September, Eric and some of the team attended the NHBC Awards at the Hilton in Glasgow. Eric was celebrated as one of 41 winners from Scotland to receive a Pride in the Job Quality award for our Walliwall site.

Winning a Pride in the Job award represents a great achievement not only for Eric but the entire Company, as well as our local supply chain. The Awards are based upon inspected quality levels, and so are testament to the brilliant and consistent quality being turned out by all the people working on our new houses.

We would like to thank everyone who has worked at Walliwall, including all subcontractors, for their hard work and commitment. This success would not have been possible without you⭐

Yesterday we were proud to have participated in the OCTG Construction Careers Fair which took place at the Mart. We had groups of S3's and S4's from the Outer Isles, KGS and Stromness Academy who came along to try various trade activities.

We enjoyed getting all the pupils involved and giving them the opportunity to have a go at building walls, installing and removing a window, as well as preparing framing and plasterboard for decoration. It was great to see the levels of enthusiasm from the pupils to get involved and have a go at the various tools, plant and materials being provided by local employers at their respective stands. We are excited and hopeful to see many of these young men and woman joining the local construction industry in the near future!
