Why do so many castles still stand today?

Walk around almost any castle in Britain and you'll probably ask yourself the same question...

How has this survived for 800 years?

It wasn't luck.

Medieval builders understood something that every good tradesperson still understands today: build it properly, and time becomes your greatest test.

Castle walls weren't just thick for defence. Their sheer mass made them incredibly stable, spreading loads and resisting movement over centuries.

The mortar played its part too. Lime mortar is more flexible than modern cement, allowing walls to expand, contract and release moisture naturally instead of trapping it.

And then there's the craftsmanship.

Every stone was shaped and placed by skilled masons who knew there were no shortcuts. They weren't building for the next owner or the next decade—they were building for generations.

Of course, castles haven't stood untouched. Most have been repaired, restored and maintained countless times over the centuries.

But that's the point.

Good construction isn't something you build once and forget. It's something that's built well enough to be worth looking after.

Eight hundred years later, many of those walls are still doing exactly what they were designed to do.

There's something to be learnt from that.

How it started vs how it’s progressing 👍🏽

Current works on the project in Kirkcaldy. You can see the progress already taking place with the cement mortar removed and now fully flush lime mortar in its place just how it should be.

Chip, chip, chipping away!!
Even in the modern day traditional methods are needed due to the severity of the wrong material being slapped all over the face of the masonry.

Recents works in Kirkcaldy complete this Easter Monday.

A full rake out, rubble rebuilding, chimney take down & fresh new lime mortar repointing created this outcome for the client.
