Flying north for the winter? 🤔 Data now reveal that Blackcaps breeding in France & Spain join others from Germany, Poland and at least three other countries to spend the colder months in the UK. Interestingly, these birds swap places with British breeders, many of which migrate to southern Spain.
More than 600 Blackcaps wintering in the UK were ringed with individual colour combinations and then reported from Garden BirdWatch gardens across the country, while the full migrations of 30 birds were tracked using geolocators. The success of this project is thanks to the close partnership of citizen scientists and BTO researchers working in collaboration with colleagues from the University of Oxford and the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behaviour.
