What a wonderful week! Lots of rain, a cracking thunderstorm and much cooler temperatures. I’ve been super productive and sowed poppies, hollyhocks and aubretia for next spring. I’ve transplanted the beetroot and done tonnes of weeding!
I’m super excited for autumn as I won’t be winding down the plot completely as I have a few plans including growing daikon and planting garlic. There’s also a bed of Brussels, and parsnips which will be their best after a few frosts 💚✨

I noticed my chard was getting decimated by aphids, instead of reaching for the bug killer I removed the mesh that was covering it to expose the aphids to predators. Sure enough they flew in. Trust the process, nature will always balance. Can you spot the hoverfly eggs? 💚

And somehow it’s already mid-August. This is always such a strange, beautiful in-between time in the garden and allotment, when you’re still harvesting summer abundance, but your mind starts shifting towards what comes next. Succession sowing, autumn crops, winter growing… there’s still so much life left in the season.

This is what I love most about growing food, this feeling of transition. It’s like a second spring in reverse, a fresh wave of energy just as things begin to slow. A chance to start again, reset, and keep growing in a different rhythm. 🫜✨🥦💚

PULL TWIST PEEL REPEAT. To harvest your sweetcorn choose a nice big plump cob, pull back a little of the husk, pierce a kernel, if the juice is milky harvest straight away. Pull down, twist, remove the husks eat fresh, grill, steam or lightly boil. fr

Some of my earliest memories of art came from the old Ladybird fairy tale books, especially the illustrations of Eric Winter.

I wasn’t only looking at the characters. I was looking at the cottage gardens, the rows of vegetables, the pumpkins beneath the leaves, the lupins in the evening light.

Those painted gardens stayed with me for decades.

Dulce Domum is, in many ways, my attempt to grow a little of that storybook world in real life 💚📖✨
