Patio sealer questions come up every week in the yard — here's the short version.

Patio sealer: sandstone yes, porcelain no.

Sandstone is porous. A sealer helps it shed spills and slows down staining, which matters on a patio that spends half the year damp.

Porcelain doesn't absorb anything, so there's nothing for a sealer to soak into. It just sits on top and eventually looks patchy.

One rule either way — never seal stone that isn't fully dried out. Seal it damp and you lock the moisture in. Wait for a proper dry run of days, which in East Yorkshire means picking your week carefully.

Which paving stone suits your house? Start with your brick. Easiest way to narrow it down? Look at your brick first.

If you've got red brick — which is most houses round Hull — warm stone sits better with it. Fossil Buff, Autumn Brown, or Raj Green if you want something a bit more earthy.

Cream or rendered walls? Go cooler. Sinai Pearl limestone keeps it soft and neutral. Kandla Grey porcelain if you want the grey riven look without the sealing and scrubbing.

Newer build, grey or mixed brick — Kandla Grey porcelain, nine times out of ten.

All five are in stock and laid out full size at the yard, so you're not guessing off a phone screen.

Chuck a bit of water on them while you're there. Stone looks completely different wet, and let's be honest, it's going to be wet most of the year here.
