Did you know a science lecture helped start the movie industry?

In February 1888, Thomas Edison watched Eadweard Muybridge project moving images of animals in motion. Most people saw a fascinating scientific demonstration, a way to study movement frame by frame.

Edison saw something bigger.

He imagined motion pictures “doing for the eye what the phonograph had done for the ear.”

He pictured them teaching students in classrooms.

He believed this could help theater reach people who lived in rural areas or could never afford a stage ticket.

He saw short-form, visual storytelling becoming part of everyday life (Hello, Tiktok!)

It is true that moving pictures had already existed before this day. But Edison and his team would begin to build the technology, studios, and system that helped turned them into an industry.
