With the submission deadline just one week away, there’s still time to apply for two exciting new tender opportunities!

📍London & South West: Level 3 Design & Draughting (2 Yr)
📍Northeast (Teesside): Level 2 Pipefitting (1 Yr)

The opportunities are on the UK Government’s Find a Tender Service, with providers able to submit bids for individual pathways or multiple pathways.

Apprenticeships are not just for teenagers.

Rachel Frieslick describes her route to industry as “quite unique”. Originally from the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland, Rachel did a patisserie course at college before working on the island as a baker.

At the age of 28, Rachel decided to try something different. She started her retraining via an online mechanical engineering college course before spending four years completing a technical apprenticeship programme.

She secured a job with Wood on the Buzzard oil rig in the North Sea and then completed an ECITB regulated qualification in Maintaining Engineering Construction Plant and Systems.

Once Rachel had finished her apprenticeship, she went straight into an SCQF Level 7 Mechanical Diploma in Maintaining Engineering Construction Plant and Systems, one of the ECITB’s regulated qualifications.

This diploma supported Rachel to position, install and adjust mechanical plant and equipment to meet operating requirements.

ECITB Chair Lynda Armstrong, CEO Andrew Hockey, Matt Knights and Martyn Johnson recently visited Hinkley Point C to see first-hand how the relationship between EDF, NNB GenCo Ltd and ECITB is supporting skills development for critical infrastructure projects.

Joined by Department for Work and Pensions - DWP’s Alex Fitzpatrick, the visit included a tour of the Mechanical Centre of Excellence (MCoE) in Cannington, one of three Centres of Excellence at the site, which opened in 2022.

The team saw the progress being made at the MCoE. The MCoE also supports delivery of the Hinkley Support Operative (HSO) Bronze and Silver programmes, helping develop the skills needed across the project.

A big thank you to Jamie White, Karl Husband, Donna Brown and Maxine Shorthouse for their time, hospitality and for sharing the progress being made.
