Thanks to signs DIY who helped bring the idea to life, we are now official but with the advantage we can still remove the signage as and when needed.

If you see us on the road give us a wave or a flash (lights😂) or even a wee toot.

And we are done!
A few bits we need to return to once the plasterer has been to skim all the walls and fit the side panel to the door but it’s been a fantastic job and the customer was brilliant in every way. David Reid

Stair upgrade completed in Bearsden this week. Both stringers fully cladded, new newel posts installed with tenons cut directly into the stringer, and all treads and risers over‑clad including a newly fabricated bullnose bottom tread. Landing opening sheeted and trimmed, with five new newel posts set out to carry an oak handrail and base rail system designed for glass infill panels. OSB templates produced for the glazier for precise panel fabrication. We’re Ayrshire based, but we cover far beyond that — if you think you’re too far, still get in touch. If it’s in Scotland, we’ll more than likely cover your area.

Day 7 — Seamil Garage Conversion

Electrician and plumber were in over the weekend and finished their first‑fix, which meant we could get moving again today.
We completed the insulation, started sheeting the walls, and installed the fire‑rated wall now that all the services are in place.
Steady progress and the space is really starting to take shape.

Day 6 — Seamil Garage Conversion (North Ayrshire)

Today we moved onto the toilet roof. We originally planned to replace a rafter affected by woodworm, but ongoing leaks were holding us back. The roofer had tried a few times to fix it, but water was still getting in, stopping our progress.

The client mentioned he planned to have the roof re‑slated, but his roofer was too busy to say when it could be done. So we proposed a solution: we’d strip the slate, replace the rotten sarking and the damaged rafter, then fit a breathable membrane to make the roof watertight. That way the roofer can re‑slate it whenever he’s free, and we can keep the job moving. The client was over the moon and told us to go ahead.

We stripped the slate — with Lucas (9) helping and stacking them perfectly — and exposed the sarking, which was far worse than expected. It was so rotten I nearly went through it. We stripped it in about 15 minutes; hardly any nails left from rust and decay. This revealed more rot in the rafters, so we proposed replacing them all while we had the roof open.

We cleaned everything up, de‑nailed the roof and wall plate, and treated the remaining timbers for woodworm and rot. Then Conner, my 1st‑year apprentice, marked out and cut his first ever cut roof under my supervision — not many apprentices get that experience nowadays, never mind a first year.

Rafters fitted perfectly, dwangs installed, and the three of us got the new sarking on in record time. Finished off with a breathable membrane felt, overlapped and tucked under the top row of slates to keep it watertight until the roofer arrives.

I’m a joiner, not a roofer — but it does exactly what it needs to do.

Day 5 — Seamil Garage Conversion

Short day today as it’s my 19th wedding anniversary, so heading off to spend the afternoon with the wife.
Still managed to get plenty done this morning — the bay window was framed out, insulated, vapour barrier fitted, thermal plasterboard on, and the window ingoes completed. All wrapped up in a few hours.
