An interesting find by one of our surveying teams recently 🔎

We've all seen these bulkhead lamps with asbestos mastic or even rope in them - but how about AIB?

When the lid was carefully opened on this light fixture, our surveyor noted a grey-white board floating in the rainwater that had collected inside the dome. Sampling and analysis confirmed it was asbestos insulating board 🔬

The lamp appears to have been retrofitted to a newer soffit construction; was the insulating board a remnant of the original soffit, or was it an intentional addition to prevent arcing or heat damage of the surface to which the lamp was mounted? Interested to hear some thoughts in the comments 👇

Tomorrow (26th September) marks Mesothelioma Awareness Day across the globe 💙

🔥 Gas Safety Week 2026: a tragic reminder of why gas safety matters

The recent fatal gas explosion in Newton Longville highlights the devastating consequences that gas-related incidents can have.

Gas appliances should always be worked on by the appropriate Gas Safe registered engineer and serviced regularly. The explosion also left a secondary hazard: asbestos was discovered within debris around the site.

It raises an important question for those managing buildings containing ACMs: are your asbestos management arrangements prepared for unexpected events such as fire, explosion or structural collapse?

The Health and Safety Executive is reviewing CAR 2012 ⚖️

At the end of last week, the HSE announced a statutory review of the current asbestos regulations, requesting views and information in two separate surveys:
