Basements like this were originally built for coal, food storage, general household clutter — that's just how Georgian and Victorian homes were designed. But most of these spaces stopped getting used decades ago, usually because of water ingress, damp and poor ventilation that never got properly dealt with.

For this client, it meant a chunk of unused space sitting right under the house.

Converting an old basement isn't about fighting the water, it's about managing it properly. Here's how we did it in 5 stages:

1. Get the active water under control
Before any permanent system goes in, we need to deal with the water that's actively coming through. Skip this step and everything installed afterwards is compromised.

2. Perimeter floor drainage
A drainage channel runs around the edge of the basement, catching water and directing it towards the sump.

3. Dual sump pump system
Two pumps rather than one — the second is there as backup, so the basement stays protected even if the first fails.

4. Cavity drain membrane
This goes on the walls and creates a drainage void behind the finished surface. Any moisture still coming through the original structure gets channelled straight into the drainage system rather than the room.

5. Build the room
With the water fully managed, we can finish the space out as an actual habitable room dry, usable, no lingering issues.

Got a Victorian or Georgian terraced house with a cellar or basement?
There's real potential sitting under your feet.

These homes often came with cellars or basements built in but most just sit there, damp, cold and doing nothing.

Moving house isn't cheap either. Stamp duty, legal fees, removals, then more work needed once you get there. Converting the space you've already got is often the smarter option.

A properly converted cellar or basement can become an extra bedroom, a home office, a gym, a home cinema, a playroom, or simply a decent utility or hobby room.

Think damp damage takes years to show up? It doesn't. Serious timber problems can start within weeks.

Dry Rot
Fungal spores can germinate in as little as 7-10 days once they land on damp timber in warm, dark, poorly ventilated spots. After that, it spreads fast through vulnerable timber and needs sorting quickly.

Wet Rot
This one needs timber that's consistently wet - we're talking high moisture levels. Give it a few weeks of persistent damp and the fungal growth takes hold, weakening the wood as it goes.

Woodworm
As soon as the eggs hatch, the larvae are feeding and tunnelling. Worst part is the damage happens out of sight, so you often won't know until it's already done.

Bottom line: don't wait years to take damp or timber decay seriously because the timber won't wait either.
