We manage the sport stalking and the commercial culling on over 200,000 acres of hill and woodland across Scotland, running the largest deer syndicate in the UK.

Very shortly we will be renewing a large percentage of the recreational ground, land which does not require commercial culling due to the tree crop being past the point of serious damage risk from deer.

Contact our factor David at Field Sports Scotland to enquire further. 🌲🦌

Change to licensing on Male Deer.

Change to licensing on Male Deer.

From 21 October, the close season - the period of the year when killing of deer is not permitted – will be removed for all species of male deer in Scotland. This change to the law was passed by the Scottish Parliament last month and was a recommendation of the independent Deer Working Group (DWG).

Deer are an iconic species but their high numbers and lack of natural predators mean they can have a negative impact on biodiversity. This change is one of several Deer Working Group recommendations the Scottish Government is taking forward to reach sustainable deer numbers and tackle the climate/nature crises.

From 21 October practitioners no longer need to apply to us for an out of season authorisation to shoot male deer. Culling male deer out of season will not be compulsory and land managers/stalkers can continue to observe traditional close seasons. Female deer seasons remain unchanged.

The Scottish Parliament has also approved changes to the law relating to the fi****ms and ammunition that can be used for deer management. These changes are expected to come into effect by Nov 3. Culling operations take place year round across our Forests, at this time of year it is stags which are marauding young tree plantations.

I've been in the culling business for 35 years or so and in that time I have encountered most aspects of the job and all of the challenges involved, these would include the conflicts of interest, the Deer welfare, the Estate & Forestry management diva's, Forestry & Land Scotlands vision, SNH's position, you name it I've seen it.

I've worked with the best and worst controllers, i've seen the S*** talkers, those that think they can commercially cull deer, the rec stalkers who think they know it all but live in London, those that went to view woodlands and reported no deer present where we then culled 120 deer.

I could go on, but I wont, much as I am tempted to.

Anyway, here we are, no one even comes close to doing what we do, managing deer over 200,000 acres of Scotland, from the furthest corners of the western isles, to Thurso, to Peterhead to Braemar and Oban, we have a huge team of sport stalkers and a very small team of cullers who do 90% of the cull annually.

Culls vary each year as do the locations & dynamics as the plantations grow past deer damage height, there is a queue for sport stalking which is managed by David at Field Sports Scotland, renewals are done only once per annum generally in Jan/Feb so get in touch with David in plenty time.

Have a great Stag season and i'll leave you with this image from yesterday courtesy of two of our top controllers working out in Ross-Shire. 🌲🦌

Not many updates on here! Busy🤣

We are still culling on restocks etc and flat out with every aspect of the forestry & deer businesses.

David at Field Sports Scotland is currently renewing all our recreational stalking grounds, we have a huge number of stalkers engaged with us on syndicate leases, there is also the chance as many do to secure stalking annually on your own, we have a number of people who elected to purchase whole leases from us instead of sharing with others.

I could not tell you if Dave does or doesnt have slots but now is the time to contact him if you are after stalking! 🌲🚜

Back in August I asked my eldest Daughter if there was anything she really wanted to do in the holidays… her response was to go stalking!

So this morning we went for it, it was evident early on that the sika & red were going for gold rutting and after a good stalk in we lay for twenty minutes with stags running everywhere, roaring all around us and some passing within 90 yards.

Soon a mature but poor headed beast presented, chasing 3 other young stags about, he pushed them right up the bank towards us and all 4 were despatched.

Safe to say Alycia had an amazing morning, I defy anyone not to get excited when you are lying undetected in the midst of so many stags roaring around you! 🌲🦌
