Residents in Dumfries and Galloway will soon be able to recycle even more of their household waste at a modern new facility which is being created using retaining walls supplied by Poundfield Precast.

Due to open in autumn 2026, Dumfries Zero Waste Park will give local people more opportunities to recycle while supporting Dumfries and Galloway Council's ambitions to increase recycling and reduce waste. We've been working with Ashleigh (Scotland) Ltd to help deliver the scheme.

Poundfield’s Alfablocs, renowned for their durability and longevity, have been used to create loading and storage bays, where they will help keep recyclable materials separate to avoid cross-contamination. This will ensure the site’s longevity for many years to come, in turn helping residents to recycle as much of their household waste as possible while supporting Scotland’s ambitions for a greener future.

We are proud to have played our part in reducing the environmental impact of a major project to replace the ageing Gallows Corner flyover in London by supplying specially made low-carbon slabs for the scheme.

Poundfield manufactured more than 90 precast decks using a low-carbon mix in which 50% of the cement was replaced with Ground Granulated Blast-furnace Slag (GGBS), a sustainable by-product of the iron industry. This helped deliver a 37% reduction (155 tCO2e) in embodied carbon for the flyover deck – the equivalent of driving a car more than 30 times around the circumference of the world.

This greener solution provided the carbon savings requested by Transport for London and its main contractor Costain without compromising on strength or durability. Costain has since been shortlisted for a national carbon reduction award for this innovative work.

We have played a major role in the construction of one of Europe’s largest recycling centres which will help divert 40,000 tonnes of household waste away from landfill every year.

The £32m facility has been created by Morgan Sindall Construction on a six-hectare brownfield site in Walsall.

We supplied more than 1,000 individual units of our retaining wall products – including Shuttablocs, Alfablocs and L-blocs – to create loading bays. The robust precast units are also forming robust storage bays at the site, where they are helping keep recyclable materials separate to avoid cross contamination and make sure as much as possible can be reused.

You can read more about our role in this exciting project and the benefits it will bring to local people on our website.

We have made good progress, thanks to Holmes Plant and Construction, in clearing a four-acre site behind our existing production sheds. Over the coming months, we plan to concrete this area, creating valuable additional storage space to support our growing operations and increasing production demands. Watch this space!

We're looking forward to catching up with farming friends and customers at the Fram Farmers Trials Open Day in Stonham Aspall on 23rd June.

We'll be bringing along some of our retaining wall units, giving visitors the opportunity to see them up close and discuss how they can support their agricultural operations.

If you're preparing for harvest and considering storage, infrastructure improvements or site developments, our team will be on hand to talk through your requirements and offer practical advice.

We hope to see you there!

Building for today is no longer enough

With increasing pressure to reduce carbon across the built environment, ultra-low carbon concrete offers a way to future-proof projects now.
Available across our precast range, it enables contractors and specifiers to meet sustainability targets without compromising on quality, strength or programme.

Stronger decisions start at the specification stage.

What if your retaining wall could be installed in half the time?

Shuttabloc offers a faster, more efficient alternative to in-situ construction – with no on-site formwork and up to 50% reduction in build time.
Manufactured off-site and installed with precision, each unit is reinforced and filled in place to create a solid, high-performance wall with a factory-controlled finish.

With a unique hollow-core design that’s filled with concrete on installation, Shuttabloc forms a solid, reinforced wall capable of retaining significant loads with confidence.

Less time on site. More certainty in delivery.

Why ground fixing matters in waste and recycling

In demanding waste and recycling environments, retaining walls do far more than divide materials – they must withstand constant impact, heavy loading and challenging conditions every day.

That’s why ground fixing is often best practice.

By securing retaining walls directly to the slab, operators can significantly reduce the risk of movement or displacement caused by heavy plant and machinery – improving both safety and long-term performance.
