We’re excited soon to be starting work on the East Garden Labyrinth Project at St. Mary’s Episcopal Pro-Cathedral in Aberdeen. This is a truly unique and prestigious project that will create a beautiful space for reflection and community use, while respecting the rich history of this remarkable landmark.

A special mention goes to David Chouman Architect, whose vision, attention to detail, and thoughtful design have brought this project to life. The plans carefully blend heritage, architecture, and landscape design to create a stunning labyrinth garden that complements the character of St. Mary’s and enhances the surrounding environment. We are proud to be working alongside David and the wider project team to transform this vision into reality.

We look forward to sharing progress as construction gets underway and showcasing the craftsmanship involved in delivering such a meaningful project for Aberdeen. 💪🏻🏛️🌿

PROJECT REVISIT
We recently revisited this garden design project at a back garden in Inverurie, Aberdeenshire. We planted up the front garden this week. The back garden was built and planted in August 2023.

This is a sunny South facing garden and we selected plants in purples, oranges and whites some of which are also native to New Zealand - the client's home nation. These include pittosporum, phormium and h**e. The borders have started to fill out nicely. Thanks to Solstice Nurseries for the beautiful plants and landscaping by Hepburn's Garden Maintenance s Garden Maintenance .

PLANT OF THE WEEK
It's Geum season and this beauty is our plant of the week!
Geums are hardy perennials which flower from late spring into summer and sometimes as late as autumn. They have semi-evergreen foliage and offer flowers usually of yellow, orange and red. Most geums reach a height of 50cm so are perfect for the front or middle of a border. Geums prefer moist but well-drained soil in sun to partial shade. Deadhead plants after flowering and divide clumps every three years.

FRONT GARDEN PLANTING DESIGN
Between the hail showers we managed to plant up this front garden today. This is a North Facing garden with a zingy colour palette of oranges, blues, greens and whites to add colour and interest throughout the year for our client. This also tones in with the colour palette in the back garden which we will post .

CHURCH GARDEN
It was great to be back at St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral Aberdeen to check on the summer planting is doing. Anthemis tinctoria 'Sauce Hollandaise' is definitely stealing the show at the moment as well as Cistus (the Rock Rose) and aquilegia. Work has also started on the new East Garden which we hope to be planting later this summer. Stay tuned for further updates!

GARDEN VISIT
A couple of weeks ago we visited this beautiful garden Douneside House and Health Club, Royal Deeside near Tarland with fellow garden designers from Society of Garden + Landscape Designers. We were given a guided tour by Kenny and Daisy, garden trainees in this garden who were very knowledgeable about the plants and setting.

Douneside is the former home of Lady MacRobert, who developed these magnificent gardens in the early to mid-1900s. Ornamental borders, an Arts and Crafts themed terraced garden and water gardens surround a spectacular infinity lawn overlooking the Deeside hills. The walled garden houses a large ornamental greenhouse and supplies organic fruit, vegetables, herbs and cut flowers to Douneside House which is a multi-award winning hotel where we also had a delicious lunch.

Fancy a visit to get some garden inspiration? Then this is worth a visit! You can book guided tours and it's also open in July under 's Gardens Aberdeenshire .

PLANTING DESIGN
Planting plan incoming! This is a completed planting plan for a back garden for a new build house in Aberdeenshire. The new border will be filled with trees, shrubs and perennials and climbers to create different layers of planting in the garden. We have also chosen plants which are dog friendly as this was an important consideration for our client. Colour palette is beautiful blues, greens, whites and purples with a touch of pink.

PLANT OF THE WEEK
Cytisus or broom is a colourful shrub which has pea like flowers in late May or early June which will bring a zing to your borders. Growing to a height of 1.2m it is great for the middle of your borders.

Looking a bit like gorse (though not invasive!) it likes well-drained soil in a sunny spot, ideally sheltered from strong winds. You can pinch out the shoots of young plants to encourage a bushy habit. After flowering, prune annually by cutting back the spent stems to young side-shoots or low buds, avoiding old wood, to promote a strong display the following year. Water well in dry spells until established, though established plants become more drought-tolerant. A light mulch in spring can help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
