How important is health and safety for a sub-contractor?
We were recently requested by one of our larger clients to provide safe contractor accreditation as part of our contract while working with them.
This seemed a daunting prospect despite us having health and safety policies and procedures in place and documented.
The accreditation process still seemed challenging. But it forced us to look more closely at what we did and did not do while we worked.
We discussed and reviewed our working practices, we replaced work equipment; we reviewed and updated our training programme to improve competencies; we reviewed our policies and procedures again to really look at what we do in practice, and how we manage health and safety for our employees, our clients, our customers, and others who may be affected by our work activities.
We are a small business with less than 5 employees. I started out fresh from college with my SVQ in Floor and Wall Tiling, a few tools in the back of my car, and the enthusiasm and determination of youth.
More than 20 years on I can look back at the challenges along the way, both on a personal and on a business level.
Balancing family life with work commitments has not always been easy, but Robert Campbell Tiling Specialists Ltd has developed and is now a thriving family business with a strong reputation for skilled and professional workmanship.
I am pleased and proud to say that we now also have Safe Contractor accreditation and consider the expenditure, time, and effort to have been worthwhile. I hope too that it gives some measure of assurance that Robert Campbell Tiling Specialists Ltd take health and safety seriously.
