🌱 216 solar panels on a local farm, with a total capacity of 116.64kWp. ☀️

We recently finished one of our larger commercial projects, installing solar PV for a working agricultural property.

Here is what went in:

✅ 216 solar panels
✅ 116.64kWp total system capacity
✅ Solis 110kW three-phase inverter

Farms use a lot of electricity, and they use much of it during the day: machinery, refrigeration, workshops, lighting and the day-to-day running of the business. That is when solar is generating, so a good share of the clean electricity is used on site rather than sent to the grid.

A system this size takes careful design. Available roof space, panel layout, the electrical supply and how the property uses power all shape the final setup, so it genuinely works for the site. ⚡

☀️ "Is solar even worth it in winter?" We get asked this every October, so here is an honest answer.

Solar panels generate from daylight, not direct sunshine, so they keep working on grey and overcast days. You will see less than you would in midsummer, but the system does not switch off when the clocks go back.

A few things shift as we head into the colder months:

🍂 Shorter days give your panels less time to generate.
☁️ Cloud cover lowers output, though daylight still gets through.
🌡️ Cooler temperatures actually suit panels. They run more efficiently in the cold. It is the drop in daylight that brings winter numbers down, not the temperature.

Generation is naturally highest across the long summer days and lowest in deep winter, then it builds back up. If you have battery storage, the surplus from a bright autumn afternoon can be saved for the evening instead of going to the grid. 🔋

💷 "How much could I save with solar?"

It is the question we are asked more than any other, and the honest answer is that it depends on your home. Most households cut their electricity bills by somewhere between 40 and 70%, which is a wide range, and where you land in it comes down to a few things:

🏠 How much electricity your household uses, and at what time of day
☀️ The size of your solar PV system
🔋 Whether you have battery storage, and which electricity tariff you are on
✅ How much of the electricity you generate you use yourself

That last one is the big one. Every unit you use at home is a unit you have not paid full price for, which is why storage and the right tariff make such a difference.

📍 Out with the old, in with the new ☀️🔋

This customer had a solar thermal system that had been decommissioned and was no longer doing anything, so we took it off and replaced it with a modern renewable setup.

✅ 6.51kWp Solar PV system
✅ Tesla Powerwall 3
✅ Tesla Backup Gateway

The new panels generate clean electricity for the home, and Tesla Powerwall 3 holds onto the surplus so it can be used in the evening rather than exported. With the Backup Gateway added, there is also backup power during eligible power cuts.

So the homeowner now generates their own electricity, stores what they do not use straight away, and takes a good deal less from the grid than before. 🏠

☀️ Think your roof is the wrong type for solar? It probably isn't.

It is one of the most common reasons people talk themselves out of solar before they have asked anyone, and in most cases the roof is fine. It just needs the right approach.

🔩 Slate and tiled roofs use different fixing systems, and both are everyday work for us.
📐 Standing seam roofs can be clamped without piercing the sheet.
🏠 Panels can sit on top of the tiles, or be set flush into the roof with an in-roof system.
🌿 And if there genuinely is not a suitable roof, a ground-mounted system can work instead.

Shading matters less than it used to as well. Optimiser technology means each panel works independently, so one shaded panel does not drag the rest down. ⚡

⚡ You have probably heard the term smart tariff. Here is what it actually means.

A smart time-of-use tariff charges different rates at different times of day, rather than one flat price. Electricity overnight is usually a good deal cheaper than electricity at teatime, when everyone is home and the kettles go on. 🕐

For a home with solar panels and battery storage, that opens up some options:

🔋 Charge your battery from the grid when rates are lowest, then use that stored power when they are highest.
☀️ Use the electricity your panels generate before you buy any at all.
💷 Get paid for the surplus. Eligible installations can receive payment for electricity exported to the grid through the Smart Export Guarantee.

The honest bit: there is no one tariff that suits everyone. It depends on your household, your usage and what you have installed. ✅

☀️ Ever wondered what actually happens during a solar installation?

There is a fair bit more to it than putting panels on a roof, and for most homes the whole job is done in around three days.

🔧 First the roof is prepared and the mounting system goes on, which is the part everything else depends on.
⚡ Then the panels go up, the inverter goes in, and the system is connected into your home's electrics.
✅ Finally everything is tested and commissioned, and your MCS certificate is issued.

Before we leave, we make sure you understand how your system works and how to get the most out of it. 💡

Most installations do not need planning permission either, which catches a lot of people out in a good way.

From new solar PV installs across Gloucestershire to battery storage upgrades, including one job where we took a decommissioned solar thermal system off the roof and replaced it with 6.51kWp of solar PV and a Tesla Powerwall 3. 🔋

And when the vans were back, our engineers were hitting the books, working towards their 2391-51 Electrical Inspection and Testing qualification. 📚
