We do tend to get a lot of staircases to do — although we don’t really talk about them much.

The devil’s in the detail with our oak staircases.
Every curve, every joint, every angle has to feel right underfoot and look right from every direction.

Quiet work, but satisfying work.

A small but satisfying job from a recent project.

This staircase was originally carpeted — softwood treads and ply risers hidden underneath.

We removed the carpet and refinished the whole thing in solid oak to match the new oak staircase we installed for the loft conversion.
Oak treads, oak risers, new life.

It’s always a pleasure taking something ordinary and giving it the same level of care as the main feature upstairs.

I`m just resharing this post as it really caught my eye today and is worthy of a look on a proper screen to really appreciate it.

Just to say that this is an absolutely gorgeous building.

We built this building in Bromyard Herefordshire back a few years ago using sweet chestnut in the round, just peeled, no other processing.

Pegged mortice and tenon construction. We felled all of the timber here from a local woodlands ourselves.

This is what we are capable of here at The Woodcraft Project.

“We are so enjoying the cabin – I wondered if you’d like to see some pics of how it looks now with plants round it etc (sort of bedded in)?”

At some point, cabins got renamed “garden rooms”. We even started using the term on our website so that people find us.

And somewhere along the way, they became small, square, feature‑poor, craft‑lazy prefabricated boxes — built for budget over beauty, function over feeling.

This cabin is the opposite of that.

Five years on, it sits exactly where it belongs: nestled into the garden, wrapped in it's surroundings, looking like it grew out of the soil it stands on.

A cabin should be an escape from the everyday — a place where inspiration comes easier, where the rules soften, where you can breathe a little deeper. A place to be yourself. A place that makes your heart sing.

So why not make your next “garden room” a cabin instead — a place of worship to your own personality, a handcrafted expression of who you are. We can build that. We can work with your ideas, your creativity, your way of living.

This one was designed as a collaboration between the client and myself one winter while I was touring Andalusia in my van.

Sketches went back and forth — too elaborate, too expensive, too small, not quite right — until everything clicked.

Design, space, feature, craft, cost… all falling into a perfect line.

A few weeks later I was back at the drawing board and peeling Douglas fir poles.

The rest is history.

Or, as Justina put it recently;

“We love it and have lunch up there almost every day. The Great T**s also love it and this was the second year they nested in the side rafters — we even got to see five of the chicks fledge in June.”

Keeping history where it belongs.

Some parts of a home carry history you just can’t replace.
At Maugersbury Manor, the client asked if their original oak beam could be saved rather than removed — and we were more than happy to make that happen.

We safely propped the structure, then had 10 mm mild steel plates made with flush countersunk fixings so everything sits neat and unobtrusive. The plates were powder‑coated black to blend in with the existing period metalwork, keeping the character of the room exactly as it should be.

Saving heritage features is something we take seriously. Whether it’s a single beam or a full restoration project, we handle every job with care, respect, and the expertise needed to protect the story already built into your home.
