Good Afternoon Everyone 😀 today is "Test it Tuesday!"

We often forget about the safety devices which are supposed to look after us... More modern installations have devices which are designed to disconnect the power quickly when a fault or life threatening dangerous condition occurs and these are usually located in your "fusebox" (sometimes called a consumer unit/distribution board)

If you haven't tested these for a while the mechanisms can stick which means that the device will not operate as intended.

Have a look a inside your "fusebox" and you may find these devices (similar to the picture below) with a button marked "Test" or "T".

To test these make sure you have powered off any equipment which could be damaged like computers and then press the button to test your RCDs/RCBOs

Its also a good idea to hit the test button on any smoke, heat or Carbon Monoxide alarms you have in your home

Little horror found last week partially hiding behind a kitchen cupboard in a recently re-fitted kitchen... Break on the neutral side of the kitchen ring main leading to cable overload.

Circuit overload device (MCB/RCBO) will not trip for this until a short occurs. An AFDD (Arc Fault Detection Device) would have triggered much earlier as a parallel arc was present between neutral and line.

Family member said they thought they could smell burning

AFDD now a requirement for higher risk installations in :2018 Amendment 2:2022

Often in this industry we are faced with dealing with the substandard dangerous work of others...

Yesterday's shocker: 8.5kW shower wired from distribution board in 4mm² reducing down to 2.5mm² at a junction box in the roof with primary insulation exposed and evidence of rodents present. You can see the insulation has completely melted from the live side of the supply where the wiring had overheated. This could easily have set fire to a block of flats. Always use a registered and approved electrician subject to regular assessment for works in your home

What should have been a nice easy job today was complicated by the previous installer taping all the wires together inside the wall and spurring a socket off instead of continuing the ring main.

Customer very happy and ring main can now be extended in the future to other locations in the garage if needed

Different day today building a pergola in a garden with my awesome assistant.

Thankfully in the shade for the majority of it.

Now it just needs some nice lights and the customer will be happy

Safety is critical in the electrical industry.

There should be some acreditation available for electricians to be able to notify the supplier/Distribution Network Operator (UK Power Networks in the East of England) so that the disconnection is recorded and managed correctly

Today's little horror found inside an outside light was wired by an "electrician"
