Different Types of Paint Stripping:

Which Method Is Right for Your Project?

When it comes to removing old paint, varnish, or coatings, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. The best stripping method depends on the material, the type of coating, the condition of the item, and the finish you want to achieve.
Here are some of the most common methods of paint and coating removal.

Chemical Stripping
Chemical stripping uses specially formulated solutions to soften and break down layers of paint, varnish, or other coatings. Once the coating has been lifted, it can be removed from the surface.
This method is often ideal for intricate furniture, detailed woodwork, and items with multiple layers of old paint. The right product and application method are essential, particularly when working with delicate or valuable items.

Stripping by Hand
For smaller projects, some people choose to remove paint themselves using scrapers, sanding, or hand tools.
While this can work for simple jobs, it can be extremely time-consuming and physically demanding. There’s also a risk of damaging the surface underneath, particularly when working with delicate wood, veneers,

Abrasive Stripping
Sanding, blasting, and other abrasive methods remove coatings by physically wearing or blasting them away.
These methods can be highly effective on suitable surfaces, particularly metal, but they need to be carefully controlled. Using the wrong abrasive technique can damage the underlying material or remove important surface detail.

Professional Stripping
For furniture, doors, architectural features, and other valuable or delicate items, professional stripping can often be the safest and most efficient option.

A professional stripper can assess the item and choose the most appropriate method for the material and coating. This can help minimise damage while achieving a cleaner, more consistent result.

The Bottom Line.....
Before you reach for the scraper or start sanding away, it’s worth considering whether DIY stripping is really the best option.

The wrong technique can turn a straightforward restoration project into a costly repair.

Choosing the right stripping method from the start can save you time, protect your item, and give you a much better finish.

Thinking about stripping an item? Talk to the professionals first.

Your furniture WILL thank you for it!

Old wood has a story — and if you’ve ever worked with antique furniture, you’ll know it doesn’t behave like new timber.

When we strip older pieces at Double Dip Paint St*****rs, we see the same thing again and again: the wood reacts differently because it’s lived a life.

Before you attempt to strip it yourself , pop us a photo over for some honest advice

Why DIY Paint Stripping Often Goes Wrong (and How to Avoid the Headaches!)

If you’ve ever tried stripping paint at home and ended up with patchy results, damaged wood, or a whole lot of frustration, you’re definitely not alone. DIY stripping sounds simple… until you’re halfway through a project wondering why the paint isn’t budging or why the timber suddenly looks scorched.

Here’s the truth: most DIY stripping goes wrong because the process is more technical than people realise.

1. Wrong products
Not all st*****rs are created equal. Many off‑the‑shelf products are too weak for older, multi‑layered finishes — or too harsh for delicate wood. The wrong choice can leave you with uneven results or even surface damage.

2. Overheating the wood
Heat guns look easy… until they scorch the timber, crack veneer, or release fumes from old paints. One second too long in the same spot and the damage is done.

3. Skipping prep
Dust, oils, old wax, and even cleaning sprays can react badly with stripping chemicals. Without proper prep, the stripper simply won’t work the way it should.

4. Not neutralising the surface
This is the step most DIY guides forget. If you don’t neutralise the wood after stripping, your new finish won’t stick — leading to blotches, peeling, or cloudy patches.

5. Underestimating the layers
Furniture often has decades of paint, varnish, stain, and wax built up. One quick coat of stripper won’t cut it, and people end up scrubbing too hard, damaging the grain.

The good news?
You don’t have to learn the hard way. We use professional‑grade products, controlled techniques, and years of experience to strip safely — revealing the beautiful wood underneath without damage.

If you’ve got a piece you’re thinking of restoring, send us a photo. We’ll tell you honestly whether it’s a DIY job
