#8 | The strongest workflow uses both

After months of experimenting at Virtual Resolution, it’s clear to us that the best projects combine AI and professional visualisation, rather than choosing between them.

AI accelerates exploration, whereas professional visualisation delivers precision. Used together, they’re far more powerful than each on its own.

#7 | AI hasn’t replaced creativity

Some people say AI removes creativity, but we actually think it does the opposite: It gives us more ideas than ever before.

It can take a simple thought and open up dozens of different directions we hadn't considered. It can challenge our first idea, help us see something from a different perspective, or give us the spark we need when staring at a blank screen.

AI doesn't replace creativity. It can help us explore what might be possible. The more ideas we have to play with, the more opportunities we have to find the one that works best.

Guided by our experience, AI gives creativity more room to grow.

#6 | Speed is no longer the differentiator

For years, studios competed on two things: Quality and speed.

Today, almost anyone can generate an impressive-looking image in minutes.

But at VR, we believe the real value is no longer how quickly an image can be produced; it’s whether clients can rely on it.

As AI becomes more accessible, trust becomes more valuable.

#5 | Who checks the AI?

If an AI-generated image is presented to a planning officer, who confirms it’s accurate?

If it’s shown to investors, who checks that the design hasn’t subtly changed?

If it’s used in marketing, who makes sure expectations match reality?

At VR, we think impressive imagery is one thing, but trusted imagery is something else entirely.

#4 | Our role is evolving

Do we think AI will replace professional visualisers? Personally, no.

However, we do think our role is changing. At VR, we’re spending less time thinking about how quickly an image can be created, and more time thinking about whether it can be trusted.

It’s all very well to create an image, but it then needs to be validated and refined to ensure it genuinely represents the scheme.

It feels to us like this might be the future of our profession.

#3 | Looking convincing isn’t enough

During our research into the use of AI in arch vis, we’ve noticed that the image that gets the biggest “wow” reaction isn’t always the one that best represents the project.

Most people reacting “wow” to an image won’t notice that AI has subtly altered building proportions, shifted windows, changed materials or made the landscaping too perfect.

But when it comes to important decisions that rely on those images for planning, consultation or investment, accuracy matters just as much as aesthetics.

#2 | AI is brilliant at creating options

One thing we’ve learnt at VR as we’ve explored the use of AI in architectural visualisation is that it is brilliant at creating possibilities.

In a matter of minutes, it can give you ten façade ideas, different lighting moods or alternative landscaping.

As amazing as that is, generating options isn’t the difficult part. The hard bit - and the part where specialist experience and expertise still matters - is choosing the option that’s accurate, practical and genuinely reflects the proposed design.

#1 | AI isn’t the problem

AI isn’t coming for architectural visualisation - it’s already here. So at Virtual Resolution (VR), we’ve spent the last year putting it through its paces. We’ve tested it and challenged it as we’ve worked out where it genuinely adds value.

Some of the results have honestly been remarkable, while others have left a lot to be desired - reminding us that speed and accuracy aren’t always the same thing.

After more than 20 years in architectural visualisation, we'll be sharing 10 of our observations from the front line over the next few weeks about the use of AI in our industry.

We don’t think we should be seeing it in black and white terms of “AI vs visualisers”. Rather, we think we should be asking: “How do we combine the speed of AI with our own experience and expertise to create architectural visualisations that are accurate and right?”
