It’s worth investing in good quality flooring that you love, remember it might outlive your current decor so neutral and timeless is always a good idea as well as taking your lifestyle and maintenance into consideration.

There are so many options with flooring, and it can be expensive so it’s important to consider what will be best for you and last a long time.

Think about who is using the area and how often, you may want to avoid carpet/light colours in high traffic areas. Think about material and colours- if you’re likely to change the colour scheme of a room but want the flooring to last, choose something neutral that has warm and cool colours through it so it won’t clash if you wanted to redecorate. Flooring that is too warm can look very orange and if it’s too cool in colour it can look stark and clinical. The wood or wood effect flooring that has both browns and greys are great neutral options to compliment all different colour palettes.

Our personal favourite is LVT/LVP (luxury vinyl tile/plank) flooring. It comes in so many variations and colours, you can get it to look like tiles or like real wood and there are some great patterned options if you wanted something more unusual! It’s hardwearing, waterproof and acoustic so will provide better sound absorption than tradition tiles or wooden flooring. @

Bespoke wood 🪵

We love a bespoke piece for the home and believe for those who like an element of control over their furniture but don’t mind higher costs, these pieces are perfect.

Bespoke wood can be used to craft pieces of furniture to personal specifications, this means that they can be designed to optimise space within rooms in your home. However, it is important to be aware that due to it being a natural material, there is no guarantee the graining in the wood will look how you want it to, therefore if you’re a perfectionist this may not be the choice for you!

Budgeting…

We understand that everyone has a budget that they aim to keep within throughout their projects. This can mean when buying things for your home eg flooring, baths, kitchens, etc, you may look elsewhere to go slightly cheaper. We understand that budgets may be tight, however we do recommend certain trades places eg .bm that we trust. This way we know how to approach and wrong/late orders and trust that what we are fitting is of good quality!

Minimising disruption during your extensions/renovations…

There is no doubt going to be a certain level of disruption during an extension or home renovation, at Oaksmith we try our best to minimise this and the stress of it as much as we can, and this is how:

PLANNING: We plan carefully so the job can run as smoothly as possible; this includes coordinating the various trades to come at the right times, scheduling deliveries and letting the customer know what to expect and when. the logistics of this can be complicated, especially on larger projects, which is why planning is essential.

CONTACTS: Using our reliable suppliers and trusted trades people ensures quality and efficiency of products and services so we know what to expect and minimise risk of problems with materials, deliveries and standard of labour.

PREPARATION: Before we start work we will prepare the site, protecting areas of the home that are not being worked in, assessing access options and agreeing where deliveries and materials will be kept. We try to address concerns early on, meeting neighbours and answering any questions from clients or anyone who may be affected.

This bath is from an en-suite bathroom we have recently fitted. Free standing baths add a sense of luxury to any bathroom with their distinctive touch. Another benefit to choosing free standing baths is the flexibility you get to be able to place it anywhere in the room, also making it easier if you’re like some of us who get bored easily and may find yourself re thinking the layout in the future.

Before rushing into purchasing a free standing bath, it is important to consider many different things, including both the interior and the exterior, ensuring the size, style etc suits both your needs and the space available in your bathroom.

Micro-cement worktop 🖤

We discovered micro-cement a while ago and couldn’t wait to try it out. It’s a very versatile product and can be used on a range of different surfaces, inside and outdoors 🔨

We used for these pantry worktops and love the “smooth but not too perfect” finish. Their cement comes in a wide range of colours and is hard wearing and waterproof- we absolutely love it 🖤

What to expect…

Disruption!!

Having a large home project like an extension or loft conversion can mean your home becomes a completely different environment to what you’re used to.

Be prepared for your driveway or garden to be used for storing materials and skips, you may not be able to use it for the duration of the project and it’s a good idea to talk to your builder upon receiving your quote as to whether or not remedial works are included.

Another big factor is the DUST. Depending on the project, this maybe something you have to put up with for a while, which can be a difficult change. Having a small area of your home to retreat to can help- make an extra effort to make this room relaxing and comfortable so you can close the door and forget about the work temporarily.

Building work can be noisy and stressful with lots of tradespeople coming in and out of your home daily, but try and have patience and focus on the bigger picture- it will all be worth it in the end🔧
