Door Handle & Gearbox – A Breakdown Waiting to Happen!

Another customer saved from a potentially expensive door lock failure!

A customer contacted me because her door handle wasn’t moving smoothly up and down and something just didn’t feel right.

When I arrived and inspected the door, I discovered two serious problems hiding inside the locking system.

❌ The handle was broken internally and was barely holding together.

❌ The gearbox spindle was cracked, meaning it could have broke at any moment, potentially leaving the door completely jammed or impossible to lock.

⚠️ The surprising part? The door was still working!

Fortunately, the customer noticed the warning signs and called before the mechanism failed completely.

🚨£300 to Drill a Lock That Didn’t Need Drilling…

A customer contacted me after an unfortunate lockout experience.

He had left his keys inside the house and called another locksmith for help. The locksmith arrived and drilled the Euro cylinder to gain entry, charging the customer £300.

The frustrating part? From what I found afterwards, the door could have been opened non-destructively through the letterbox, without drilling the cylinder at all.

It didn’t end there. After destroying the existing lock, the locksmith then wanted another £400 to supply and fit a replacement Euro cylinder. At that point, the customer felt something wasn’t right, refused the additional work, and contacted me instead.

The following morning I attended the property and:

✅ Replaced the drilled Euro cylinder
✅ Checked the locking mechanism
✅ Tested the door and lock
✅ Left the property secure again 🔐

£700 for a lockout and replacement Euro cylinder would have been an extremely expensive outcome.

Not every locked-out door needs to be drilled. A professional locksmith should assess the situation and, where practical, consider non-destructive entry methods before damaging the existing lock.

It Was Still Working… But Something Didn’t Feel Right! 🔧🚪

An interesting gearbox replacement today.

The customer’s door was still locking and unlocking, but the mechanism didn’t feel quite right. Rather than waiting for it to fail completely and potentially leave the door jammed shut, I decided to investigate further.

I removed the gearbox from the door — and found that it was already broken internally! ⚙️❌

It was still managing to operate, but it was only a matter of time before it failed completely.

Jammed Door Opened & Failed Gearbox Replaced in Horsham🔧🚪

A more challenging repair today — the customer’s door was completely jammed shut after part of the multipoint gearbox snapped off internally, leaving the locking mechanism stuck in position.

Because the broken part was trapped inside the mechanism, the usual opening methods weren’t possible. I had to carefully drill the failed gearbox to release the locking points and get the door open without replacing the whole door.
