Another oil-to-heat-pump transformation complete 🌱🏡

A recently completed installation in Somerset, replacing an older oil-fired heating system with a modern 8kW Ariston Nimbus Pocket air source heat pump.

This wasn't simply a case of swapping one heating appliance for another. The wider heating system was upgraded to work effectively with the new heat pump, helping the property get the efficiency and comfort it was designed to deliver.

The completed installation included:
🔧 8kW Ariston air source heat pump
💧 200L high-gain hot water cylinder
🌡️ 9 radiator upgrades plus 2 additional radiators
⚙️ Open-loop heating system with weather compensation
🧲 Magnetic and debris filtration
❄️ Anti-freeze valves for additional system protection
🛢️ Removal of the existing oil boiler, cylinder and loft tanks
🏠 Making good of the redundant oil heating arrangements

Where suitable, we were also able to retain the property's existing heating pipework rather than replacing it unnecessarily.

The finished system has been designed to provide both heating and hot water, with an estimated MCS heating SCOP of 3.92 at its 47°C design flow temperature.

Another property successfully moved away from oil and onto a modern, lower-carbon heating system - designed properly, installed properly and ready to be supported for the long term.

A heat pump service is about more than just giving the unit a clean 🔧

We recently carried out a full service on this Daikin Altherma air source heat pump, alongside servicing the property's unvented hot water cylinder.

Our engineer cleaned and checked the external unit, evaporator, fan and internal chamber, as well as inspecting the expansion vessel, controls, strainer and magnetic filter. The cylinder and its safety components were also tested, with pipework and joints checked for any signs of leaks.

Importantly, servicing also allows us to identify things that could cause problems further down the line.

On this visit, we found that the external pipe insulation was beginning to deteriorate and the system's glycol protection was currently at 0°C. With no fill and flush point installed, we've since fitted anti-freeze valves and renewed the external lagging.

We also spotted some small weeds growing beneath the outdoor unit and advised keeping the area clear to maintain good airflow.

A few relatively straightforward preventative measures now can help protect the system and keep it performing reliably when it's needed most.
