Fresh from the workshop: Accoya window frames for the Grade II listed renovation we're managing in North Devon!

Built by Complete Joinery & Design Limited, these are replacing poorly detailed 20th century units that were already suffering from decay, and restoring the character the building deserves.

External joinery has plenty to contend with here. North Devon's damp, exposed climate could support a temperate rainforest! Accoya gives us the character of real timber with performance built for those conditions.

Why we like it:
🪟 Stability: less swelling and shrinkage, so windows and doors keep operating smoothly as the seasons change

🍂 Durability: a 50-year above-ground warranty against fungal decay (subject to conditions)

🎨 Lower maintenance: less timber movement means coatings last longer, extending intervals between decoration

It's a responsible choice too, with strong sustainability credentials. Accoya is made from fast-growing, FSC-certified timber and holds Cradle to Cradle Gold certification. Its long service life reduces replacement demand and keeps carbon locked into the timber for longer.

Of course, great results still rely on good detailing, the right ironmongery and ongoing care, but it's a strong combination of durability, appearance and responsible material use.

More updates on the process to follow!

Cheers to the Bradworthy Inn! 🍻

We recently obtained Listed Building Consent for the Inn, for a new courtyard canopy, giving them a fantastic outdoor event space. It’s all weather, so the music can carry on whatever the forecast, and it can be withdrawn to open the courtyard up on sunny days. Getting consent for a listed building can be tricky, and it’s lovely to see a practical, modern addition that respects the original building now up and in use.

You can see it doing its job in the photos - the first one showing a gig with Two Day Hangover! Simon, brother of our director Hannah, is in the band!

Simon is also part of Complete Joinery & Design Limited, who built our new office desks and are currently making the window joinery for the Grade II listed farmhouse we posted about at the end of August.

We love how connected everything is! A local pub, a local band, a local joiner and a local architectural practice, all working together and making good things happen for the community. 💛

If you’re planning work to a listed building and need help with planning or consent, get in touch. We’d love to hear about it! Call on 01409 253363, or email [email protected].

👋🏻 Meet Josh, our 3D ninja at Piper Architecture!

Josh has been with us for 4 years now and works on everything from site surveys, concept designs, detailed technical drawings and building regulations. He's our go-to for 3D design, bringing our ideas to life before a single brick is laid!

We asked Josh a few questions...
🏠 𝐅𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝?
"St Peter's Basilica in Rome. Went to see it last year and the attention to detail is amazing."

✏𝐅𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐬𝐨 𝐟𝐚𝐫?
"I'm working on a replacement dwelling at the moment, it's got some great architectural aesthetic features. I've modelled it in 3D which was a bit of a task, but now I'm taking it to the detailed tech stage and I'm enjoying the challenge of figuring out how certain elements will work together and researching construction details I've not used before."

🍪𝐅𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐤 𝐬𝐧𝐚𝐜𝐤?
"Bacon cheese turnover. No question."

💭𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐦𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐠𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮?
"This moustache was my own personal choice."

👶𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞?
"A football player. I kind of am...I play for Holsworthy AFC, £10 a game mate!"

🏠✨ From concept to 3D reality!

Back in June, we welcomed Jaxon for a week-long work experience placement here at Piper Architecture. Jaxon arrived with a dream home already designed in a video game, and set about recreating it using proper architectural software.

We've already shared his floor plans, and today we're showing off the 3D elevations he brought to life (both part of the concept design stage), working alongside our very own 3D ninja, Josh 🥷

The result was a brilliant piece of design work for someone just getting their first taste of architecture, and honestly - we were so impressed!

Planning appeal allowed for two new homes within a rural hamlet in North Devon.

The decision provides an early indication of the potential impact of the new National Planning Policy Framework.

Piper Architecture provided full architectural services throughout the project. We remain committed to helping shape considered, sustainable rural development and good placemaking across our region.

The revised NPPF, published on 17 August 2026, is more supportive of housing delivery and smaller rural sites. For rural Torridge, the key changes include:

* A strong presumption in favour of suitable development within defined settlements, unless its adverse effects substantially outweigh the benefits.
* Express support for “limited infilling within groups of houses”, including outside defined settlement boundaries. This could unlock genuine gap sites within hamlets and small clusters that may previously have been resisted under Local Plan Policy ST07.
* A requirement for councils to identify more small-site opportunities and enable villages to grow and thrive, particularly where development supports local services.
* Substantial weight being given to the benefits of providing homes that meet evidenced local housing needs.

The result is a significantly stronger case for well-related rural infill plots, particularly where they complete an established frontage or occupy a contained gap.

As a practice, we believe in proportionate and well-designed growth within our villages—helping to sustain communities, services and local trades. Larger developments will have a role to play, but they should not be the only means of meeting local housing needs.

Another peek at the new office! 👀

Our old office was about the same size as this meeting room alone - maybe even a touch smaller!

It's the perfect spot for catching up with clients and contractors. A table big enough for spreading out architectural drawings, plus tea and coffee always on tap.

A big thank you to Dale from Howarth Electrical Services for being such a good sport and about having his photo taken mid-meeting this morning!

Where architecture meets the wild... 🌲

This stunning aerial shot captures one of our current projects in its natural setting, nestled deep in the Devon countryside and surrounded by woodland, a winding river, and rolling pasture. Drone photography like this reveals just how much thought goes into designing with the landscape, not against it.

Our sites often sit within a rich mosaic of habitats: mature woodland, riparian corridors (a strip of land and its vegetation that runs along the banks of a river, stream, or other watercourse!), and open meadow - all areas that support local wildlife and biodiversity. We're proud to work closely with ecologists throughout the design process to make sure every project respects and enhances its surroundings.

Huge thanks to Design with Ecology for this beautiful drone photograph, and for their expert ecological guidance on this project!

Welcome to our first mini-series, "What we've been up to" - let's call it a catch up, seeing as we've been MIA for a little while.

We've been leading the careful renovation of this stunning Barton farmhouse in North Devon, from the early strategy and listed building consent, right through to construction on site.

It's been a real privilege to work with the custodians of the property, as they invest in the future of this beautiful (and rather complex!) historic building.

The project involves unpicking some misguided 20th century alterations, sensitively repairing and strengthening the historic fabric, and introducing energy efficient heating to create a warm, dry and comfortable home for their retirement.

Working closely with South West Archaeology Ltd and Torridge District Council's Conservation Officer, we secured planning and listed building consent before tendering the works and bringing together a team of skilled tradespeople and craftspeople. Construction is now well underway, led on site by the main contractor, The Veale Brothers.

We're continuing to guide the project as Project Managers, Lead Designers and Contract Administrators, giving our clients continuity from design through to construction - and importantly, keeping all the moving parts on track!

And, as with any old building, the more we uncover, the more interesting the story becomes. The works are revealing a building whose evolution is far more complex than its official listing suggests.

It's exactly the kind of project we love - thoughtful design, conservation, skilled craftsmanship and a great team of people working together to give an old building a new lease of life.

We'll be sharing more as the work progresses and the building's story continues to unfold!

Community is at the heart of what we do here at Piper Architecture, and we love supporting local businesses both in and out of work.

Our directors, Hannah and Lyndon, visited Farm's annual Tomato Festival on Sunday, enjoying a wonderful four-course meal prepared by the exceptionally talented Mariana and Al using produce grown on the farm.

It was so inspiring to see the abundance that can be produced from a relatively small area of land! Trigon Farm is a true celebration of regenerative farming and a more thoughtful relationship with the natural world.

A lovely afternoon reconnecting with nature (they were even treated to the sight of a hummingbird hawk-moth feeding on the verbena), the land and the origins of good food – and a timely reminder that the best designs begin with an understanding of the elements, the landscape and the nature around us.
