Archangel Architects Supporting church and community building projects and inspiring eco friendly home improvements.

We believe the best buildings are created from a close partnership between client and architect. We like to think of our role as being your critical friend; we’re at your side to support and guide, but we’re also there to question. When choosing an architect, what you are really buying, therefore, is not a product (any half-decent architect can deliver a completed building), nor even a service, but a relationship; and when we’re choosing whether to work with a client, we’re looking for a degree of engagement.

Making more of our church buildings.

We're back at the Church Resources Exhibitions (CRE) this week!

Today, Nigel Walter gave a talk about creating multi-use church spaces and engaging with local communities, helping churches make the most of their buildings.

This year, we're also sharing more of our work helping churches provide affordable housing alongside improved church and community facilities. It's an exciting opportunity for churches to make a real difference to local people's lives.

We've refreshed our Church Build exhibition stand too, with plenty of free resources and practical advice for churches planning for the future.

If you're at CRE, come and say hello! You'll find us on stand G1, opposite the coffee bar again. ☕

A good Sunday morning at Archangel.

Duck End Barns made the cover of The Sunday Times Homes this weekend, following its certification as the UK’s first Passivhaus Premium home.

It’s a wonderful piece about the project and the story behind a home designed to produce more energy than it uses.

Above all, huge thanks to our clients, Stephen and Michael. Their ambition was fundamental to what Duck End Barns became, and we’re enormously grateful for the openness and generosity with which they shared their home and their experience with The Sunday Times.

A lovely moment for everyone involved in the project, captured here with Apos and a copy hot off the press.

A UK first. 🎉
Duck End Barns has officially been certified as the UK’s first Passivhaus Premium home and featured in The Times this weekend.
Passivhaus Premium represents the highest level of Passivhaus performance, combining exceptionally low energy demand with enough renewable energy generation to make the building net positive.
It’s a fantastic milestone for the project and for sustainable residential design in the UK.
We’re hugely proud of the team who made it possible, and especially grateful to our clients for their ambition and trust throughout the journey.
Congratulations to everyone involved!

Archangel will be back at the Church Resources Exhibitions this October, as Church Build.

CRE is always a good opportunity to meet people thinking about the future of their church buildings, from the first seeds of an idea to projects already well under way.

This year Nigel Walter will also be speaking on Multi-use church spaces and community engagement, looking at how church buildings can support worship while opening up new possibilities for community use.

📅 Thursday 15 October
🕥 10.30am
📍 Sandown Park, Esher

If you’re visiting CRE this year, come and find the Archangel team at the Church Build stand, and join Nigel for his talk on Thursday morning.

It was such a joy to attend the opening of the Southoe Community Hub, to see close to 100 people thronging the building, and even a bouncy castle!

The scheme, including the installation of WCs and the clearing away of pews, both shows off the medieval architecture and enables the broader community to enjoy and use the building.

In the long term, it is only the buildings that are used that will survive. The return of this 13th-century Grade I listed building to the centre of its community gives it a bright future.

Something exciting is on the horizon for Duck End Barns, but we're not quite ready to share the full story yet.

We recently welcomed a national journalist to the project, where our clients shared their experience of bringing an ambitious vision to life and what it's been like to live and work in the completed home.

Revisiting the project's journey was a reminder of what can be achieved through collaboration, shared ambition and a commitment to creating buildings that perform as beautifully as they look.

A huge thank you to our clients for taking part and for helping tell the story of the project.

There's more to come, and we can't wait to share it with you.

Stay tuned...

☀️ Chasing an eclipse in Valencia.
🏛️ Exploring 13th and 14th century landmarks, including Valencia Cathedral and the Torres de Serranos.
🌳 Seeing how a former road junction has been transformed into a people-first public space, with trees, seating and room to breathe.
✨ Then on to the City of Arts and Sciences.
🎭 The Palace of Arts. 🔬 The Science Museum. 🎬 The Hemisfèric cinema.
🤍 From a distance, everything appears white.
👀 Up close, it's a fascinating mix of concrete, render and mosaic tiles.
🌬️ One of David's favourite details? The cinema's external louvres.
☀️ Providing shade. 💨 Encouraging airflow. 🌡️ Very welcome in 33°C heat.
📸 And for the eclipse photos... you'll have to visit David's Instagram.
A reminder that great architecture can be centuries old or boldly contemporary, but the best design always responds to people, place and climate.

A few hours on site can produce a huge amount of useful information.

Brian has been carrying out a point cloud scan of a commercial building, capturing the building as it is and creating an accurate digital record of the existing structure.

The scan produces a detailed 3D point cloud that can be used to understand the building, its dimensions and its relationship with the spaces around it.

This was a survey-only commission, but accurate information about an existing building is valuable in its own right. It gives clients a clear picture of what they have, and a reliable starting point for any future work.

There is something rather satisfying about seeing a building captured in this way, from millions of individual measurements into a single, navigable record.

A work experience placement is much more valuable when the work is real.

This week, Archangel welcomed the first of three students joining the practice this summer. As a Year 12 student interested in landscape design, he was given a live design exercise based on the landscaped area in front of one of our current projects.

Following the RIBA work experience toolkit, he developed a proposal for the space, exploring changes in level, ramped access and seating arranged around an existing memorial tree. At the end of the week, he presented his ideas to the team through sketches, plans and visualisations.

He also joined Archangel’s quarterly office meeting, where some fairly high-level practice strategy was under discussion, and accompanied Alex on a quinquennial church inspection. It was a varied introduction to architectural practice, from landscape design and presentations to business planning and the care of historic buildings.

Two more students will join Archangel next week. Each will be given a brief shaped around their own interests, but with the same aim: to offer a useful and honest experience of working in an architectural practice.
