A little look at how we test finishes on wood floors 👀

With any wood floor project, we like to carry out a test patch either before the job or on the day. It’s a really useful way of seeing how the different finishes will actually look on your own timber.

For the test patch, we:

➡️ Sand a small area to prepare the floor
➡️ Mask out a grid so we can test different options
➡️ Apply the relevant oil or primer, depending on the finishing system

We work with a range of leading brands, so there are lots of different options when it comes to the final look and finish.

For this particular engineered wood floor, the customer decided to go with a lacquered finishing system. We tested primers from Bona and Saicos to match the shade they were looking for.

It’s always much easier to choose a finish when you can see it directly on your own floor rather than trying to imagine it from a sample.

👉 We’ve also put together a video showing more about the different finishing systems we use: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0teLwbgCD5s

We kicked off this week’s project today, a sandstone tile restoration in Burbage.

Although we're only at the beginning of the restoration process, the improvement is already visible. The stone is starting to reveal its natural tones once again as years of ingrained dirt, grime and surface contamination are carefully removed.

Check out the photos to see the difference already 💚

These Black Galaxy Granite kitchen worktops and island had gradually lost some of their clarity and shine over the years, along with developing several minor chips and defects after more than 20 years of use.

The restoration process began with a thorough deep clean to remove surface contamination, grease and residues that can interfere with polishing. Minor defects were then repaired using a colour-matched resin repair system, allowing the repairs to fully cure before being refined and blended into the surrounding stone.

Once the repairs were complete, the granite was polished using the Faber Star Shine Easy system. This process enhanced the surface clarity and reflectivity while bringing out the depth of colour and characteristic metallic flecks that make Black Galaxy Granite such a distinctive material.

To complete the restoration, a stone sealer was applied to help reduce staining potential and support ongoing maintenance.

The reel shows the worktops before restoration, the repair process, and the finished results. The final images highlight the improved clarity and reflectivity of the polished granite, with the window reflection demonstrating the quality of the finish achieved.

Our comprehensive scope of work for this project included:

✅ Deep cleaning of all granite worktop surfaces
✅ Minor chip and surface repairs
✅ Polishing using the Faber Star Shine Easy system
✅ Application of stone sealer to kitchen worktops and island

A little different for us this week… we’re in the middle of moving house!

As you can imagine, things are a little hectic behind the scenes, so there may be a slight delay in responding to emails, messages and enquiries over the next few days.

We’ll still be keeping an eye on everything and will get back to you as soon as we can.

Thank you for your patience and understanding while we juggle boxes, floors and everything in between! 😅

This week we're starting a stone floor restoration project in Queniborough, while also restoring a Travertine floor for their neighbour.

Both floors will be professionally cleaned, restored and protected to enhance their character and help keep them looking their best for years to come.

We’re looking forward to sharing the finished results once both projects are complete.

We were back in Snarestone this week visiting a returning customer ahead of their upcoming pine floor restoration project, which is scheduled to start next month.

Before any sanding work begins, we always recommend carrying out a test patch when a stained finish is being considered. This allows the customer to see how different stain colours will look on their own floor and choose a shade with confidence.

This pine floor will be fully sanded to remove the existing finish and years of wear, before being stained in the customer's chosen shade and protected with a durable (2K) two-component lacquer for a long-lasting finish.

It's particularly nice to be returning to this property, having restored the flagstone floors throughout the kitchen, hallway and lounge back in Spring 2024. The stone floors are still looking fantastic and performing exactly as they should, which is always great to see.

We're looking forward to getting started on the wood floor next month and sharing the finished results.

Back in February, we restored the pine floors at The Courtyard in Stoke Golding, carefully sanding the original pine boards and refinishing them with Arboritec primers and lacquers.

Since then, the customer has had the steps at the French doors replaced, so it was time for us to return and bring the new timber into the same finish as the surrounding living room floor.

And even better, we received some more lovely feedback from our customer:

⭐️ “Once again thank Chris for a lovely job and both your professional ways of dealing with customers.”

A huge thank you for the kind feedback! It really does mean a lot to us 💚

When we arrived at this Nuneaton kitchen, the Corian worktops and island were showing all the usual signs of a busy kitchen…fine scratches, dull areas and general wear from everyday use.

We started with a thorough deep clean to remove surface contamination and prepare the Corian for restoration. We then worked through the polishing stages using the Star Shine Easy system from Faber, alongside our Hyper Grinder Orbit CT, carefully refining the surface and restoring its appearance.

By the time we finished, the worktops and island looked completely refreshed 🫶🏽 and felt beautifully smooth to the touch!

A great example of how effective professional restoration can be, giving a well-used surface a new lease of life without the need to replace it ♻️
