Creating a chipped edge finish on Jura Blue-Grey limestone.

Rather than leaving a perfectly straight edge, the stonemason works along it by hand, deliberately chipping away small sections of stone to create a more irregular, rustic appearance.

As Simon explains, it's a finish some clients specifically ask for because it takes away the precision of a machine-cut edge and gives the stone a more traditional, natural character.

The technique is particularly well suited to harder natural stones such as granite and dense limestones like Jura, although it can also be used on softer limestones.

The important part is controlling something that's intentionally meant to look uncontrolled.

Giving an existing dining table a new lease of life.

Rather than replacing the whole table, Simon kept the original base and replaced the existing top with a piece of natural stone, cut and finished in the workshop to fit.

It's a simple way of completely changing the look and feel of a piece of furniture while making use of what's already there.

And when you work with stone every day, choosing a new table top becomes a little more interesting.

There are many different types available, each with its own colour, texture and character. Depending on where it's quarried and how it's finished, slate can range from deep blacks and greys through to greens, purples and warmer tones.

It's a good reminder that stone can be far more than worktops, fireplaces and staircases. In the right hands, the same raw material can be carved and shaped into something entirely different.

This Arabescato Gold kitchen worktop has been manufactured in our workshop and is being carefully loaded onto the truck ready for its journey north.

This counter-top has a recessed drainer AND draining grooves, which makes it highly functional.

It's a relatively small detail in the overall kitchen, but one that requires precision to get right and makes a real difference in everyday use.

Some pieces of stone come with a story.

This sculpture has been sitting in our factory for many years. It was created by sculptor David Warburton and, at one point, was destined for the bin.

Simon couldn't quite let that happen, so he rescued it—and it's been part of the workshop ever since.

When you spend your life working with stone, it's difficult to see a piece of craftsmanship like this simply thrown away.

Cladding a curved sink in Botticino Classico Italian marble.

Curved stonework like this takes careful planning. Each section of marble needs to be accurately cut, shaped and positioned so that the finished cladding follows the form of the sink cleanly and consistently.

We've worked with this client on many projects over the years, and that long-standing relationship makes ambitious pieces like this possible. There's a level of trust and understanding on both sides that allows us to push what can be achieved with natural stone.

Here Simon takes a closer look at a sheet of Semi-Rijo limestone, quarried in Portugal.

The stone is supplied at a thickness that's particularly well suited to manufacturing traditional stone fireplaces, giving us enough material to machine the profiles and details required.

Based on an average-sized fireplace, we can usually manufacture around three complete surrounds from a single sheet.
