🌿 September is hedge trimming time!

Have your hedges got a little out of control over the summer?

September is a great time to get them back into shape. 🌿

🐦 Why September?

March to August is the main nesting season for many of our garden birds, so extra care needs to be taken with hedge cutting during these months to avoid disturbing or damaging active nests.

As we move into September, nesting activity generally reduces, making early autumn a good time to tackle many hedge-trimming jobs.

Regular trimming isn’t just about making your garden look tidier.

It can also help:
✂️ Keep hedges at a manageable height and width
🌿 Maintain dense, healthy growth
🏡 Stop them becoming overgrown or too woody
🚶 Keep paths, driveways and boundaries clear

If your hedges have been enjoying a summer growth spurt, now could be a good time to get them back under control!

🌿 GORDON’S GARDEN TIP – Weeds thriving in your lawn?

🌱 Have you noticed the weeds thriving in your lawn after this summer’s drought?

While prolonged dry weather can leave grass stressed, thin and patchy, some established weeds seem to cope rather better — and once the grass thins out, they can become much more noticeable.

If weeds are taking over your lawn, there are two main ways to deal with them:
1️⃣ Remove them by hand
For lawns with a smaller number of weeds, individually digging them out - making sure as much of the root as possible is removed - can be a very effective option.
It can, however, be surprisingly time-consuming and physically demanding, particularly if you have lots of deep-rooted weeds such as dandelions. If you’d rather not spend your weekend on your hands and knees digging them out, I can do it for you.

2️⃣ Treat them with a selective lawn weedkiller
Where weeds are more widespread, a selective herbicide may be a more practical solution. These are designed to target common broad-leaved weeds while leaving the grass unharmed when the correct product is chosen and applied properly.

* I’m PA1 & PA6 qualified, which allows me to safely and legally apply professional treatments using handheld equipment. I can assess your lawn, identify the most appropriate approach and apply treatment correctly.

🐾 And what about pets?
As a pet owner myself, I know this is an important consideration. Any products I use are applied strictly according to the manufacturer’s safety instructions, and I’ll let you know exactly how long pets need to stay off the treated area before they can safely return.

Sometimes pulling weeds is the right answer. Sometimes treatment makes more sense. I’ll discuss your needs and recommend the approach that’s most appropriate for your lawn. 🌱

🌱 Has the summer drought left your lawn looking a little worse for wear?

After such a long, dry summer, many lawns are looking brown, thin or patchy. The good news is that early autumn can be a great time to help them recover.

But not every drought-damaged lawn needs the same treatment. Some will bounce back well once cooler, wetter weather arrives, while others may benefit from more extensive renovation.

With experience in greenkeeping, I can assess the condition of your lawn and recommend what it actually needs - whether that’s simply time and rainfall, some targeted treatment, or a full renovation.

Where a full renovation is appropriate, my five-step process typically includes:
1️⃣ Cut – mow the lawn ready for renovation.
2️⃣ Scarify – remove dead grass, moss and excess thatch.
3️⃣ Aerate – relieve compaction and help air, water and nutrients reach the roots.
4️⃣ Overseed – introduce new grass seed to thicken sparse areas and fill bare patches.
5️⃣ Top dress – apply a suitable dressing to improve the surface and create good conditions for the new seed.

🌦️ Why autumn?
The combination of warm soil, cooler air temperatures and typically more moisture creates good conditions for grass seed to germinate and establish before winter.

And don’t panic if your lawn looks worse immediately after scarifying! That’s often part of the process — you’re clearing out unwanted material to give healthy new growth a better chance.

If your lawn has struggled through the summer, get in touch and I can take a look and advise on the best way to help it recover.

Investing in the right kit makes all the difference.

Alongside my STIHL equipment, one of the best investments I’ve made has been my Henchman Ltd ladder.

It’s incredibly stable, even on uneven ground, which means I can work at height more safely and confidently — particularly when tackling taller hedges.

Good equipment isn’t just about making the job easier. It’s about doing the job properly and safely. 🌿
