🔥 “I hardly use my fireplace… does my chimney really still need sweeping?”

It’s a question we get asked regularly , particularly when a fireplace or wood burner is only used at Christmas, on very cold evenings, or just a handful of times each winter.

The answer is yes, we would still recommend having it swept and checked regularly.

Why?

Because a chimney can change even when you’re not using it.

Over the course of a year we can find:

🕸️ Cobwebs restricting airflow
🐦 Partial bird nests or nesting material
🍂 Leaves and debris
💧 Signs of water ingress or deterioration
🧱 Loose brick or mortar debris
🔥 Tar or creosote deposits
🏠 Problems with chimney pots, cowls or liners

A chimney can actually look surprisingly clean from below but still have a restriction further up the flue.

🔥 Chimney Tip: Don't build a huge fire straight away.

One of the biggest mistakes people make after their stove or fireplace has been unused is loading it with lots of logs immediately.

Instead:
✅ Start with 2–3 eco firelighters
✅ Add 3–4 pieces of dry kindling
✅ Allow the chimney to warm up for around 5 minutes
✅ Then add one kiln-dried log

A smaller, hotter fire establishes a much better chimney draw, produces less smoke and helps prevent the glass from blackening.

Taking a few extra minutes at the start makes all the difference.
