👋 We're hiring: Bid Writer – 12-month Maternity Cover

Central Group is looking for a bid writer to join our Bids & Marketing team for 12 months.

We're a roofing, cladding and building envelope contractor, delivering around 1,700 projects a year for the public sector and commercial clients. Most of our work is won on quality as well as price, so the written submission really matters.

What you'll do:
- Write quality answers for tenders, PQQs and frameworks – health and safety, programme, method statements, quality, social value, environmental and more
- Work with our key staff - contracts managers, surveyors and H&S teams to clarify the project details
- Build on a strong library of previous submissions and help us keep improving our scores

What we're offering:
- Hybrid working, based from home and/or any of our regional offices
- Full-time or part-time – we're open to talking about the hours that work for you
- A supportive, experienced bid team and a real say in how we answer

Ideally, you'll have written scored quality submissions before, preferably in construction, and you'll enjoy turning technical detail into clear, persuasive writing.

🤝 Supporting our communities goes beyond the projects we deliver.

Over the past few weeks, teams across Central Group have been giving their time and support to local causes, charities and community organisations.

🪏 In Manchester, four members of the team spent five hours helping demolish and remove a timber greenhouse and outbuilding at an allotment in Gorton.

The plot is owned by nearby Wright Robinson College and will be used by students, with the team contributing to help prepare the space for its next use.

🥾 Meanwhile, six members of our Bridgend team took part in the Victory Over Cancer Trek in support of Velindre Cancer Centre Fundraising, completing the 21km Llanelli Coastal Path event in just under four hours.

The team is continuing its support for Velindre Cancer Centre Fundraising with a bake sale this Friday, helping raise further funds for the charity.

⚽ We have also continued our support for grassroots sport through Central’s partnership with Hereford Pegasus FC for the season.

Central was recently presented with a plaque in recognition of our support for local football, community spirit and sporting excellence as a club partner, a great reminder of the value local partnerships can bring both on and off the pitch.

From practical volunteering and charity fundraising to supporting grassroots sport, there are many ways our teams can make a positive contribution to the communities around us.

🏗️ Milefield Primary School Refurbishment
A major refurbishment across a live primary school requires more than technical roofing expertise — it requires careful phasing, safeguarding and coordination from day one.

Central Group were appointed to deliver a comprehensive refurbishment of the school’s ageing roof and wider building envelope while both the school and Family Hub remained fully operational.

The existing building presented several challenges, including ageing profiled metal roofing, fragile rooflights, deteriorating cladding, and structural defects in the central apex roof.

Following investigation, the works developed into a wider refurbishment programme including:
🔹 Reconstruction of the central apex roof with new structural steelwork
🔹 Installation of a Euroclad Elite 7 built-up roofing system
🔹 New Joris Ide structural decking and high-performance insulation
🔹 Replacement of fragile rooflights with Brett Martin non-fragile rooflights
🔹 Liquid-applied waterproofing to lower roof areas using Alumasc Caltech UV
🔹 Renewal of rainwater goods, flashings, fascias, soffits and perimeter details
🔹 High-level insulated cladding upgrades
🔹 Installation of a permanent Soter fall arrest system for future maintenance access

With pupils, staff and Family Hub users on site throughout, the programme was carefully phased around term dates, break periods and school holidays.

Deliveries, lifting operations and plant movements were coordinated around pupil arrival and departure times, while crash decks, scaffold protection and exclusion zones helped maintain safe separation between the works and occupied areas.

The completed refurbishment delivered a safer, more durable and thermally improved building envelope, with upgraded weather protection, improved daylighting and reduced long-term maintenance requirements.

A complex, multi-system refurbishment delivered in a live education environment with safeguarding, coordination and long-term performance at the centre of the project.

🏠 Pitched roofing is about far more than replacing tiles, slates or sheets.

The most demanding projects often combine steep access, complex detailing, heritage constraints, occupied buildings and the need to maintain weather protection throughout the works.

That is where experience matters.

Our approach starts before the first covering is removed.

Delivering a major roof refurbishment at the heart of a live university campus requires careful planning from day one.

Central Group were appointed as Principal Contractor to refurbish multiple roof areas at Student Central, one of the busiest buildings on the University of Huddersfield campus.

With the building remaining operational throughout, the works had to be carefully planned around busy pedestrian routes, deliveries, lifting operations and day-to-day university activity.

The existing waterproofing systems and extensive green roof had reached the end of their serviceable lives, with the green roof no longer providing the biodiversity and rainwater attenuation benefits originally intended.

Our works included:
🔹 Installation of a new Garland UK Dura-Coat liquid waterproofing system
🔹 Retention and reuse of existing XPS insulation wherever possible
🔹 Reinstatement of the extensive sedum green roof with new drainage layers and growing medium
🔹 Installation of permanent Mansafe systems for future inspection and maintenance
🔹 Refurbishment of the boardroom roof, canopy and patio areas

One of the key challenges was managing materials and equipment safely at roof level.

When the original crane strategy proved unsuitable, the lifting methodology was redesigned around three smaller cranes, with the revised operation completed over a Bank Holiday weekend to reduce campus footfall and maintain safe access.

The completed refurbishment delivered a durable waterproofing solution across approximately 1,776m², restored the performance of the green roof and improved long-term access and maintainability.

Delivering roof refurbishment across occupied university buildings requires careful planning, coordination and control.

🏗️ Joseph Priestley & Charles Sikes Buildings – Roof Refurbishment
📍 The University of Huddersfield | 📐 1,000m²+

Central Group were appointed as Principal Contractor to refurbish the roofs of the Joseph Priestley and Charles Sikes buildings as part of the University of Huddersfield’s ongoing investment in its campus estate.

With both buildings remaining operational throughout, the works had to be carefully planned around university activity, public access routes, rooftop plant and live building services.

The existing bituminous and single-ply roof systems had deteriorated, with water ingress, ageing drainage and restricted maintenance access creating ongoing operational concerns.

Our works included:
🔹 Overlay and localised strip-and-replace works to the Joseph Priestley Building
🔹 Full replacement of the failed single-ply roof at the Charles Sikes Building
🔹 Installation of Garland UK two-layer reinforced bituminous waterproofing systems
🔹 Insulation, gutter and drainage upgrades
🔹 Removal of redundant plant and repositioning of retained services
🔹 New guardrails, roof access systems and a permanent Mansafe system

The Joseph Priestley Building sits above a public access road and alongside a key pedestrian route, requiring extensive segregation, controlled lifting operations and careful material movement using GEDA vertical hoists and craneage.

Roofing works were also sequenced around live M&E services and retained rooftop plant to maintain safe access and uninterrupted university operations throughout the programme.

The completed refurbishment delivered improved waterproofing, enhanced drainage and thermal performance, safer future maintenance access and durable roofing systems supported by 20-year manufacturer-backed warranties.

A complex live-environment refurbishment, delivered with safety, coordination and long-term performance at the centre of the project.

In aid of Macmillan Cancer Support, on Saturday 12th September Rachael Bestwick is taking on the Cotswolds Mighty Hike Marathon (again!). And on the 22nd of September, Central Group is holding a coffee morning and cake sale.

Together, we are doing whatever it takes to support the 3.5 million people living with cancer in the UK. Every pound counts!
