IS AIR CONDITIONING EXPENSIVE TO RUN?

A lot of people assume air conditioning must use huge amounts of electricity — especially when it’s being used for heating.

But modern air-conditioning systems are actually air-to-air heat pumps. Instead of creating all their heat directly from electricity, they transfer heat from outside into your home.

That means a system can deliver several units of heat for each unit of electricity consumed, depending on the equipment and operating conditions.

Why can it work so well?

⚡ Heat-pump technology — moves heat rather than simply creating it with an electric element.

🏠 Heat the room you’re using — individual systems can give you control over specific areas rather than necessarily heating the whole property.

🌡️ Maintains temperature — inverter-driven systems can reduce their output once the room approaches the set temperature.

🔥❄️ One system, two jobs — efficient heating during colder weather and air conditioning when temperatures rise.

💡 TOM EXPLAINS:

Don’t judge running cost simply by the electrical kW written on the unit.

What matters is how efficiently the system converts the electricity you’re paying for into useful heating or cooling, alongside factors such as outside temperature, insulation, room size, set temperature and how the system is used.

And remember — you don’t necessarily need to replace your existing boiler.

Air conditioning can be used alongside your central heating, giving you another way to heat individual rooms while also giving you cooling for summer.

🔧 TOM’S TIPS — #3

DO YOU KNOW WHAT PRESSURE YOUR BOILER SHOULD BE? 🔥

For many sealed central-heating systems, the pressure when the system is cold will typically be around 1–1.5 bar. Always check the manufacturer’s instructions for your particular boiler.

If the pressure gets too low, you may find:

⚠️ Your boiler won’t operate correctly
🌡️ Radiators aren’t heating properly
🔧 A low-pressure warning or fault appears

If the pressure is regularly dropping, simply topping it back up isn’t necessarily fixing the problem. It could indicate a leak, an expansion-vessel issue, a pressure-relief problem or another fault that needs investigating.

Likewise, if the pressure rises excessively when the heating gets hot, that’s worth getting checked too.

💡 TOM’S TIP: Keep an occasional eye on your boiler’s pressure gauge or display. A small change between cold and hot can be normal — repeatedly losing pressure isn’t.

If you’re constantly having to repressurise your boiler, get the cause checked rather than continuing to top it up.

Sometimes it’s the smallest components that can cause the biggest problems!

During a recent job, we came across this room thermostat that had suffered a serious electrical component failure, causing it to overheat and catch fire.

As you can see from the photos, the damage was significant — and it’s a reminder of just how important it is to take heating system safety seriously.

⚠️ Why regular heating system maintenance matters:

✅ Helps identify signs of wear, damage and potential faults.

✅ Helps keep your boiler operating safely and efficiently.

✅ Can highlight issues before they develop into costly repairs.

✅ Provides an opportunity to discuss ageing or faulty heating controls.

🔧 Remember: A boiler service is an important part of maintaining your heating system, but it doesn’t guarantee that every electrical fault will be detected or prevented. Room thermostats and external heating controls may require separate inspection.

🔥 WILL TURNING YOUR THERMOSTAT UP HIGHER HEAT YOUR HOME FASTER?

It’s a common misconception!

You come home to a cold house, so you turn the thermostat straight up to 25°C or even 30°C, thinking it’ll warm the house up quicker.

But here’s the thing… it generally won’t! 👀

🌡️ HOW DOES IT ACTUALLY WORK?

On most conventional heating systems, your room thermostat tells the heating when to switch on and off.

Whether you set it to 21°C or 30°C, the heating won’t necessarily work any harder or warm the house any faster.

The higher setting simply tells the system to keep heating until it reaches that temperature.

And if you forget to turn it back down, you could end up using more energy than you intended! 💷

✅ WHAT SHOULD YOU DO INSTEAD?

✔️ Choose a comfortable room temperature — around 19–21°C suits many households.

✔️ Give your heating time to bring the property up to temperature.

✔️ Use a programmer or smart thermostat to manage your heating schedule.

✔️ If your home takes unusually long to warm up, investigate why rather than just turning the thermostat higher.

If your heating struggles to get your home comfortable, the thermostat might not be the problem.
