RUN A PUBLIC VENUE IN HEREFORD? MARTYN'S LAW COULD AFFECT YOUR BUSINESS.

If you own or manage a hotel, pub, leisure centre, visitor attraction or event venue in Hereford, this is something worth knowing about.

We've been looking closely at Martyn's Law and what it could mean for local businesses, particularly those welcoming large numbers of visitors.

And we thought it was worth sharing.

So, what's changing?

Martyn's Law, officially the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025, introduces new security and emergency preparedness responsibilities for certain public venues.

If your premises can reasonably expect:

200–799 people at one time – You may fall within the standard tier, which focuses on emergency procedures, evacuation, lockdown and communication.

800 or more people – Qualifying larger venues face additional security requirements, including appropriate measures to reduce vulnerabilities.

These numbers include staff, not just visitors.

BUT DOES THIS MEAN YOU NEED CCTV?

Not automatically, no.

However, for larger venues, a well-planned CCTV system could play an important part in wider security arrangements.

And this is something we feel strongly about.

You don't necessarily need more cameras. You need the right cameras, positioned properly, recording clear footage and covering the areas that matter.

Poor WiFi in a Large Building? Here’s What We Changed
Poor WiFi in a large building is usually not fixed by simply buying a more powerful router.
On this job, the building needed proper WiFi coverage throughout, so we installed a correctly designed network using multiple access points rather than relying on one router to do everything.
This type of setup is ideal for:

- Properties with thick walls
- Buildings with poor WiFi upstairs or at the far end

Ever opened a network cabinet and thought… what on earth has happened in here? 😅
That’s exactly what we walked into on a recent commercial job.
Years of additions, old cabling, mystery connections and equipment changed over time. With two businesses coming together, we were asked to work out what was still being used, trace the existing network and start again properly.
That means more than just pulling in a few new cables.
We trace what’s there, work out what connects where, install new Cat6 and Ethernet cabling where needed, terminate the connections and test everything before it goes into service.
Because a network shouldn’t just work today — it should still make sense to whoever opens that cabinet in a few years’ time.

How do you connect two buildings without digging a trench?
On this Wales project we needed to get a reliable network connection from one building to another.
Rather than digging across the site, we installed a 35 metre fibre optic link overhead.
Why fibre?
✅ High-speed connection
✅ Ideal for longer distances
✅ No copper distance limitations
✅ Excellent for linking separate buildings
✅ Reliable network backbone
✅ Suitable for CCTV, WiFi and general network traffic
This is the sort of job where fibre can make much more sense than trying to push Ethernet too far or relying entirely on a wireless bridge.
