A really proud moment for both me and Cubit Contracts — I’ve been featured on the official Grand Designs Live page as one of their experts!

It’s a real privilege to represent Cubit Contracts alongside some of the most respected names in the industry and to share the experience and knowledge we’ve gained over the years.

I’m looking forward to joining the expert team at Grand Designs Live and helping homeowners make informed decisions about their building and renovation projects.

Another update from our major Barnt Green transformation. 🏡

This project includes a substantial two-storey wraparound extension, complete renovation of the existing property and a full loft conversion.

The brickwork is progressing well while internally we’re continuing the full strip-out, taking much of the existing property back to brick before upgrading and rebuilding it properly.

There’s a huge amount of coordination involved in a project of this scale, with multiple stages progressing alongside one another.

We’ll be documenting the project right through to completion, so keep following to see how this one develops.

The biggest budgeting mistakes in home extensions rarely happen on site.

They usually happen months earlier.

A homeowner appoints an architect.

They commission drawings.

Planning permission is approved.

Structural calculations are complete.

They’re excited because their project finally feels real.

Then they ask builders to price it…

…and discover the build costs far more than they expected.

Nobody has done anything wrong.

The architect designed exactly what was asked for.

The homeowner followed the process they thought they should.

The problem is simply that the person who understands construction costs often isn’t involved until the biggest financial decisions have already been made.

After pricing hundreds of extensions and renovations, we’ve seen this pattern repeat itself time and time again.

That’s why, from 1st September 2026, we’re changing how every new Cubit project begins.

We’d rather help someone make the right decision at the beginning than deliver bad news at the end.

We’ll prepare a Detailed Cost Plan from £125 including VAT.

This is professional cost planning.

Following a site visit, we’ll prepare a detailed construction cost plan and project financial document, giving you a realistic understanding of what your project is likely to cost before you commit to construction or choose your builder.

It’s yours to keep and use, whether you build with Cubit or not.

We’ll begin with a 40-minute Design Consultation, followed by a written Feasibility Report from £490 including VAT.

You’ll receive honest advice, realistic budget guidance, layout recommendations and clear next steps before you spend money on architectural drawings.

A £1,000 reservation secures your place in our programme and is credited in full against your construction contract.

We’re introducing this process because better decisions are made when realistic construction costs are introduced earlier.

The strip-out is done, and the brickwork is now up to first floor joist height. From the drone you can really see it — the footprint of the new spaces laid out against the valley behind, walls rising exactly where months of design work said they would. It’s the point where clients walk the site and, for the first time, stand inside rooms they’ve only ever seen on paper.

From here things move quickly. The masonry carries on up to roof height, and then comes the detail this whole design hinges on: full-height glazed units across the front, built to pull that valley view straight into the living space. Honestly, it’s the element we’re most excited to install on this one.

We’ll be sharing the build stage by stage as it progresses.

A question for anyone who’s extended or renovated: what was the moment your project first felt real? Walking the footprint? First fix? Or not until the plaster went on?

Every beautiful family home starts as a hole in the ground — and honestly, this is the stage we wish more people got to see.

We’re over on one of our bigger builds in Barnt Green this week. The foundations have been poured, the drainage is set, and the bricklayers start Wednesday. None of this will ever be visible in the finished photos, but it’s the work that everything else stands on — literally. Get the below-ground stage right and the rest of the build runs calm. Get it wrong and you’re paying for it for decades.

From this point on, things move quickly. The walls come out of the ground, the shape of the extension appears, and the clients start seeing the home they’ve been imagining on paper for months become real in front of them. It’s the best part of the job.

We’ll be sharing this build as it progresses, stage by stage.

There’s a stage in every build that homeowners rarely see — and it’s the one that matters most.

Everyone pictures the finished result: the light flooding in, the new kitchen, the reveal. But long before any of that, there’s the structural stage you’re looking at here — a live extension & renovation we’re currently building in Rowney Green. This is where the real craftsmanship happens. The structure, the openings, the things that have to be right before a single finish goes on.

We think it’s worth showing, because it’s the honest part of the process. When a home is designed and built properly from this point, the finished result looks effortless — and it lasts. When corners get cut here, no amount of decorating hides it later.

It’s also the part that tells you most about the team you’ve chosen. Anyone can style a finished room for a photo. Far fewer get the bones right.
